Pieve di Teco: Arcades, Churches and Local Culture

The large pointed-arch arcades along Pieve di Teco’s central street were built from the 15th century onwards and were largely completed in the first half of the 16th century. Craftsmen, especially shoemakers and tailors, often worked beneath them. The combination of historic architectural form and shops and workshops that are still in use today makes the arcades a place where architectural history and everyday local life are directly connected.

The town’s ecclesiastical history includes Madonna della Ripa, built in 1370 as the first parish church of the new centre of Pieve di Teco. It is a Gothic three-aisled church with stone columns. Today’s Collegiata San Giovanni was completed in 1806 after 24 years of construction and preserves a 15th-century baptismal font.

Theatre and Cultural Venues

The Teatro Salvini has a 43-square-metre stage and 99 seats in the stalls, boxes and gallery. The theatre was restored and reopened to the public in 2005. Another cultural venue is the permanent exhibition “Maschere di Ubaga”. It is located on the ground floor of the S.A.A.C.S. “Sebastiano Manfredi” in the former Augustinian convent in Pieve di Teco. Together, these two places broaden the view beyond churches and arcades to include a theatre space, masks and the use of a former convent as an exhibition venue.

Rivers, Caves and Regional Nature

Pieve di Teco lies at the confluence of the Torrenti Arroscia and Arrogna. The Campasso – Grotta Sgarbu Du Ventu Site of Community Importance (SIC) is also located in the area of Pieve di Teco. The caves of Campasso – Grotta Sgarbu Du Ventu extend for around 3 kilometres and are home to animal species including numerous beetle species, bats and amphibians. These natural features complement the town’s cultural side with river landscapes, cave environments and wildlife.

Pallapugno, Carnevalle and Local Cuisine

Pallapugno is a traditional sport in Pieve di Teco; the town has two pallapugno clubs and a sferisterio. Carnevalle also shapes the events calendar: it takes place every year on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, and allegorical floats from the surrounding municipalities in the valley take part.

The local cuisine uses garlic from Vessalico and Ligurian herbs such as thyme, oregano, basil, marjoram, rosemary and bay leaves. These ingredients give Pieve di Teco’s culinary side a clear regional profile and complete the picture of a town whose distinctive features are visible on different levels in its architecture, culture, nature, customs and cuisine.
