San Pietro Vara: Art, Memory and Community Life

The Chiesa di San Pietro is one of the oldest churches in the valley. The first records of it date back to 1176. Inside is a Madonna and Child statue attributed to the sculptor Domenico Gagini. This draws attention not only to the great age of the religious building, but also to a specific art-historical detail.

Another important site is the Oratorio di Santa Maria della Spianata. It is known for its distinctive crucifixes, was restored in the late 1990s and is considered one of the two treasures of San Pietro Vara. These three aspects – the crucifixes, the restoration and its attributed status – give the Oratorio a distinct profile among the area's cultural monuments.

The Monumento ai caduti di San Pietro Vara commemorates those who fell in the First World War, as well as those who fell or went missing in the Second World War. The site thus preserves a visible memory of the people connected with these two periods of war.

For everyday needs, San Pietro Vara has shops, bars and restaurants. This gives you various places to shop, take a break or enjoy a meal without reducing the character of the destination to individual sights.

Water and Trails around San Pietro Vara

The Vara features a course for canoeing, rafting and kayaking. It runs from San Pietro Vara to Brugnato and is supported by schools and courses. Those interested in water sports will therefore find a clearly defined route with various activities and organized support from these providers.

The Anello del Benessere also offers an opportunity to experience the landscape on foot. The hike leads from Salterana toward San Pietro Vara along a 1 km stretch of paved road. On the return journey to Cembrano, the circular route passes between fields, meadows and orchards.

Regional Cuisine and Traditional Events

At the 2023 edition of San Pietro Vara in Fiera, porchetta sanpietrina, sgabei, sausages, cured meats, cheese and regional wine were offered. The selection reflects a local festival cuisine in which hearty meat and sausage products feature alongside cheese and regional wines.

The same 2023 edition also featured 150 itinerant vendors and artisans in the town, along with demonstrations of traditional crafts. For visitors, the focus was therefore not solely on food, but also on the presence of artisans and traditional demonstrations.

Several religious celebrations structure the year: the Festa Patronale di San Pietro is associated with 29 June. Nostra Signora del Carmine takes place on the second Sunday in August, while Madonna di Loreto is associated with the second Sunday in September. These three dates offer different points of reference for planning a trip, without implying a current promise that the events will take place.
