Sea and Architectural History in Vernazza

Vernazza combines a striking seaside location with a dense succession of churches, fortifications and historic paths. At the western edge of the town, the church of Santa Margherita di Antiochia stands directly by the sea. It was first mentioned in 1318. Belforte is a quadrangular bastion above the rocks at the entrance to the harbor of Vernazza. The Mura e Convento dei Frati complex comprises walls, a tower, a church that has since been deconsecrated and a cloister, and dates from the 17th century. The Castello Doria fortress is also located in the vicinity of Vernazza. At the beginning of the path to Corniglia stands a tower whose construction resembles that of the tower at Castello Doria. Historic Paths and Views

Regional trains stop in Vernazza, one of the railway stations of the Cinque Terre. Near the station begins the historic mule track, Path 508, formerly Path No. 8. It connects the town with villages in the highlands. Between Vernazza and Foce Drignana, this path features Stations of the Cross with marble reliefs beside the vineyard terraces. The reliefs are set in tabernacles or in the dry-stone walls that border the terraces. Path 508 passes through different landscapes: between Vernazza and Foce Drignana lie vineyard terraces, while the route to the sanctuary leads through olive groves and vineyards.

The sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio is also one of the defining destinations around Vernazza. It has a Romanesque façade and has been mentioned since 1248. The path from Vernazza station to the sanctuary follows Path 508 through olive groves and vineyards and offers views of Vernazza. Path 592-4 (SVA2) Vernazza–Monterosso begins at the small harbor of Vernazza and provides another independent starting point for exploring the town's paths.
