Tivegna between Churches, Wine and Monte Croce

Tivegna lies on a hill overlooking the Vara and Magra valleys. At the Villa delle Streghe, the view extends across the valley below. Churches and Historic Traces

Tivegna is home to the old Oratorio della Madonna del Carmine, built in 1616 for a local brotherhood. The parish church of San Lorenzo Martire acquired its present size between 1639 and 1642 and can be traced back to 1229. The Oratorio della Concezione on Via Pié di Foce dates from 1633.

The old Chiesina di Piè di Foce is associated with a celebration of the Madonna della Neve on August 5. The Chiesa del Palazzo is dedicated to the Madonna, while the Chiesuola della Madonna dell’Orto is associated with a celebration on July 2. A local legend says that the Chiesa delle streghe was built by witches in a single night.

A Fortified Sandstone Village

Tivegna was a fortified village with a castle, a tower, the castellan’s house Casa Carletti, walls and a church. Two clearly recognizable gates remain from the former walls. Sandstone portals with an archaic character shape the appearance of the village.

The Casale detto “Il Palazzo” in Carnevale, Tivegna, is a listed immovable cultural heritage property; its protection is dated to 1935. Casa Carletti, the former medieval Castello in Tivegna, is likewise a listed immovable cultural heritage property; its protection is dated to 1937. These two buildings complete the image of a place whose history remains legible in individual buildings and preserved traces.

Wine and Local Cuisine

The Sagra del Vino di Tivegna was established in 1970 on the initiative of local winegrowers. It takes place every year during the first week of September. At the Sagra del Vino, handmade ravioli and Cotoletta alla Tivegnina are offered alongside wine. In this way, the festival combines the wine tradition with specific specialties of the local cuisine.

Hike to Monte Croce

The hike from Tivegna to Monte Croce begins at the car park on Tivegna’s piazza and follows the marked CAI Trail 270. It runs along small roads and paths through dense forests. The Piana Battolla–Tivegna–Monte Croce route is associated with a stated length of 7.033.
