Historical depth in the city centre

Albenga offers you a varied gateway to Italian history. Particularly impressive is the Battistero di Albenga, built in the 5th century AD. From the outside, it features a decagonal structure with an octagonal drum. Inside, the baptistery preserves a baptismal font and a 6th-century mosaic depicting numerous Christian symbols. When planning your sightseeing, it is important to note that access to the Battistero is currently available as part of a guided tour through the Museo Civico. Albenga’s Roman archaeological heritage also includes an amphitheatre. Another historic stop is the Cattedrale di San Michele: its Romanesque construction phase comprises a single nave separated from the bell tower. The cathedral was later extended in the Gothic style with aisles, and the bell tower was incorporated. It opens onto the Piazza of the same name in the heart of the city of Albenga.

The Museo Diocesano di Albenga houses an extensive art collection spanning more than 1,000 years of history. The “Magiche Trasparenze” exhibition provides a distinctive focus.
