Discover Alassio: Culture, Coast and Italian Moments

Alassio can be explored through its pedestrian street, art venues, ancient paths, beach and sea. In the centre lies the Budello, Alassio’s most frequented pedestrian street; it stretches for two kilometres. You can walk along it, although authorised vehicles are permitted in some sections. Today, around 1,000 ceramic tiles can be counted on the Muretto. In 1953, Mario Berrino began creating the Muretto opposite Caffè Roma as a constantly evolving open-air art installation.

Art and Urban History

The Don Bosco Natural History Museum was established in 1950 through the work of Don Giulio Mariti. Its exhibition comprises mineralogical, crystallographic, petrographic, malacological, mycological, palaeontological, fossil, zoological, ichthyological, historical, thalassological, hydrospelæological, ethnographic, herbarium-related and floristic sections. The Richard West Memorial Gallery was established in 1907 as an exhibition venue for Richard West’s paintings. It displays 76 works that West painted during his stay in Alassio between 1888 and 1905, and also houses an English library with around 15,000 volumes.

Ancient Paths and Mediterranean Landscape

The Via Iulia Augusta complex includes the route of the ancient road and the tomb monuments located along it. The Via Iulia Augusta runs for around five kilometres from the Chiesa di Santa Croce in Alassio to the Abbey of San Martino in Albenga. Along the way, it passes through Mediterranean maquis and offers views of the sea and Isola Gallinara. Connected with Alassio are the Vipera Ciclovia, a 5.98-kilometre mountain-bike route, and the Salita pedonale Solva, a 2.5-kilometre footpath. For the hills around Alassio, the creation of various maps for mountain-bike tours, walks in the countryside and road cycling is also planned.

Beach, Sea and Excursions

Alassio has a golden beach with very fine sand. La Cappelletta is a viewpoint above the waves and offers views across the Baia del Sole. The Coscia Tower was built in the 16th century to protect Alassio from invaders arriving by sea. A snorkelling excursion offered between Alassio and Isola Gallinara takes you close to the island. It includes a boat trip, free use of snorkelling equipment and lunch with drinks on board, and is suitable for everyone.

Flavour and the Rhythm of the Year

Local specialities include Baci di Alassio. The two biscuits are made from PGI Piemonte hazelnuts, sugar, egg whites, acacia honey and cocoa, and joined with chocolate cream and fresh cream. The Fiera De.Co. takes place every year around 7 December.
