Bormida-Genepro: Discover Churches, Trails and Festivals

Churches, Architecture and Local History

For planning your trip to Bormida-Genepro, three main focuses are available: culture, trails and events. Cengio is located in the Val Bormida di Millesimo on the northern side of the Ligurian Alps. Cengio railway station is on the Turin–Savona railway line and has a ticket machine. In addition to churches and historic buildings, trails and festivals are also part of the local character.

The Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari was first mentioned in 1205 as “Ecclesia Rochetale sub Cingio”. In the mid-19th century, it was rebuilt with a central floor plan. It preserves an organ built in 1830 by the Vittino brothers from Centallo.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giuseppe has a large mosaic behind the altar, with a statue of Saint Joseph at its center. Access is also guaranteed for people with disabilities. The Chiesa dei Santi Barbara e Giovanni Battista was built at the beginning of the 20th century in the neo-Romanesque style by adapting a former civilian industrial structure of the SIPE plant. Inside, a statue shows a wound on the right leg rather than the left.

The Santuario della NativitĂ  di Maria Vergine dates from 1662 and features Piedmontese Baroque style, a portico and a stone portal from 1807. Access is also guaranteed for people with disabilities. The Cappella di San Rocco houses a statue showing the saint with a wound on the right leg rather than the left.

The Teatro di Palazzo Rosso hosts various cultural events, including theatrical performances, concerts, exhibitions and conferences. The Torre Saracena was built in the 13th century. It was almost completely destroyed; today, only one side of the building remains.

Historic Trails and Nature Experiences

The historic Cengio Alto trail leads from Genepro via Valgelata and the three-way junction to Cengio Alto. It is 0.9 km long and has an elevation gain of 130 m. The trail leads to an ancient village dating from the 12th century and to the Santuario della NativitĂ .

The Area Naturalistica attrezzata Rio Parasacco includes an approximately 6 km-long nature trail for the outward and return journey. It follows the Rio back and is equipped with information boards about the environment and local history. The cycle and pedestrian path connects the center of Cengio with the hamlet of Vignali, Roccavignale and Millesimo.

Festivals and Local Gastronomy

Cengio in Festa is an annual spring event in Cengio. Local gastronomy is at its center, including the De.CO. di Cengio frittella offered by the Pro Loco. The program of Zucca in Piazza 2025 included tastings and show cooking.

The Festa Patronale della NativitĂ  di Maria Vergine is a traditional event held every year in the historic center of Cengio Alto in the Province of Savona.
