Between the Centa and wooded hills: landscape and directions

Campochiesa lies on a strip of flat land between the Centa River and the hills. The centre is set in a gently rolling landscape with woods. The Centa River and the hills mark the two sides of this location. The local landscape also includes fields shaped by agriculture, churches, an oratory and a chapel.

A specific arrival reference point is the Church of San Giorgio di Campochiesa. It can be reached from the Aurelia state road towards Ceriale via a signposted turn-off. For travelling to San Giorgio, the Aurelia state road, the direction towards Ceriale and the signs on site are therefore the key reference points. Anyone heading to San Giorgio can plan the journey using these three indications.

Churches, fresco, oratory and sacred art

San Giorgio was built along the Via Julia Augusta and originated in the Middle Ages. In the Romanesque period, probably in the 12th century, the church was rebuilt and enlarged. Inside, San Giorgio di Campochiesa preserves a fresco of the Last Judgment dating from 1446.

The sacred sites in Campochiesa include, besides San Giorgio, the Church of Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano, the Oratory of the Nativity of San Giovanni il Battista and the Chapel of San Sebastiano. In the Church of Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano, the main altar dates from 1778 and was transferred from the Sanctuary of Pontelungo in Albenga. The triumphal arch is decorated with stucco and adorned with almost fully sculptural statues of Saints Peter and Paul.

The Oratory of the Nativity of San Giovanni il Battista is located in the historic centre of Campochiesa. The Chapel of San Sebastiano is in the Morteo district. It is normally closed; to visit it, you must contact the Confraternita di San Giovanni Battista. For the Chapel of San Sebastiano in Morteo, this contact is therefore part of the specific visit planning and must take place before a visit can be made.

Pigato and festivals throughout the year

Wine, including Pigato, is produced in the fields around Campochiesa. The annual calendar includes the patronal feast of Saints Fabiano and Sebastiano, associated with 20 January, as well as the feast of San Giorgio, the co-patron, associated with 23 April. In the historic centre of Campochiesa, the Chestnuts and Rossese festival is also associated with the first Sunday in October.

The Anello Peagna-Salea-Campochiesa circular trail can be completed in about half a day and is also considered suitable in winter. For day planning, the trail can be scheduled as a separate roughly half-day activity alongside the churches in the town.
