Sassello showcases the northern side of the Ligurian Apennines with a landscape of dense forests and a town center where architecture, religious buildings and local streetscapes stand closely together. At the same time, the geological perspective extends far beyond the houses: the visitor center at Palazzo Gervino focuses on the distinctive features of the Beigua Geopark. For planning your trip, Sassello can therefore be viewed from two perspectives – as a historically shaped town and as a starting point for exploring forests, rocks, fossils and natural history topics.

Historic Center and Italian Town Character

The historic center of Sassello is characterized by significant secular buildings. These include Palazzo Gervino and Palazzo Doria with the “Giardino delle Anime pure.” Works of art are mainly kept in religious buildings, so the cultural side of the town can be discovered particularly through its churches and their furnishings. In the Caruggi, the traditional narrow streets, you will find craft shops, pastel-colored houses and old shop signs. These details give a walk through Sassello a distinct local character without reducing the town to a single attraction.

Piazza Concezione is an attraction in the historic center. It is home to the church of the same name and the square in front of the Church of the SS. Trinità. The Basilica della Immacolata Concezione is also part of Sassello’s religious heritage: it has three naves in a late-Renaissance style. The “Vergine del Guastavino” is housed in the Parrocchia di San Giovanni Battista; its frame is decorated with painted copper panels from the second half of the 17th century.

Architecture with Clear Proportions

A single-nave Baroque church in Sassello is 39 m long, 11.60 m wide and 18.30 m high. Its layout includes the choir, the presbytery and six chapels, as well as two smaller chapels at the entrances. Sassello is also home to a large vaulted fresco by the painter Paolo Gerolamo Brusco (Bruschetto). For visitors interested in culture, this creates a picture that connects sacred spatial design, painting and the town’s historic architecture.

Geology in the Beigua Area

The Centro Visite di Palazzo Gervino is located in the historic center of Sassello and is dedicated entirely to geology and geomorphology. Using modern multimedia exhibitions, it provides information about the distinctive features of the Beigua Geopark and about international geopark networks, including the UNESCO-supported Global Geoparks Network. Palazzo Gervino also marks the beginning of the main axis of the historic center and houses the visitor center of Beigua Regional Natural Park.

Geological topics include the Ponte Prina fossil coral site. Well-preserved coral colonies can be found there, often preserved in their life position and of considerable size; the site is considered one of the most significant deposits of Oligocene coral fauna in northwestern Italy. At the Maddalena-Ponte Prina site, there are coral formations from the transition between the Lower and Middle Oligocene, around 28 million years ago. This depth of time adds a natural-history dimension to the historic tour.

Forests, Paths and Nature Observation

Sassello lies in an area with dense forests. The forested surroundings offer numerous paths for excursions and walks. The La Foresta della Deiva route is a scenic trail that explores forests, fauna, botany and ornithology. Sassello’s natural side is therefore aimed not only at hikers, but also at anyone who wishes to consider plants, animals and the landscape as topics in their own right during their stay.
