Lago di Cassiglio: lake and mountain landscape

Lago di Cassiglio is an artificial alpine lake at an altitude of 870 metres in the Orobie Prealps. The water surface is therefore situated in an alpine landscape and is separated from the higher-altitude Baita Foièr in the Cassiglio Valley by 365 metres of elevation. However, this difference does not automatically describe the actual gradient of the trail. For planning a trip focused on the lake and mountain trail, it is therefore a fixed but limited reference point.

Trail to Baita Foièr in the Cassiglio Valley

Baita Foièr lies at an altitude of 1,235 metres in the Cassiglio Valley and now serves as a comfortable bivouac shelter. Along the trail to Baita Foièr stands a large beech tree that is counted among the monumental trees of the Province of Bergamo. The Bivacco Baita Foièr is always open; however, permission must be obtained by calling 339-1686428 in order to use it. Anyone combining this mountain trail with a stay in the bivouac must therefore treat obtaining permission as a separate planning step, even though the Bivacco is always open.

Independent cultural trail through Cassiglio

The cultural trail through Cassiglio can be explored independently. However, the chapels are open only during celebrations or organised visits. The independent trail should therefore not be equated with the chapels being open at all times.

Sanctuary and feast day in Cassiglio

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was first built in 1630, the year of the plague, as a church for the plague victims. In Cassiglio, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated every year on 8 December with a solemn Mass and a procession from the sanctuary into the town.

Palazzo Milesi and local history

Palazzo Milesi is a richly decorated 17th-century building with late-18th-century frescoes, including a “Serenata macabra”. The fresco depicts a young nobleman and two musicians in a theatrical scene in which they serenade the woman they love. The building and frescoes therefore belong to different historical periods in the town’s history.

Crafts and metallurgical tradition

For centuries, Cassiglio had a metallurgical tradition, particularly the manufacture of horseshoe nails. The nails were also in demand in markets far away. Their distribution therefore extended beyond the immediate place of manufacture.

Cassiglio’s annual festivals

The festival at Baita del Foier was listed in Cassiglio for 13 August. The feast of the patron saint, the Apostle Bartholomew, was listed in Cassiglio for August. A depiction of the Nativity through the streets of Cassiglio was listed for 24 December.
