Scanzorosciate: Moscato di Scanzo and Hilly Landscape

Scanzorosciate combines a distinctive hilly landscape with winemaking traditions, traces of history and paths through a varied cultural landscape. The town stretches from the hills near Gavarno Vescovado to the plain on the banks of the Serio east of Bergamo. This creates a destination where you can explore the landscape, regional products and culture in different ways.

Hills, vineyards and paths

The Cammino del Vescovado is a 32 km-long itinerary that runs from Scanzorosciate to Chiuduno, or in the opposite direction. On the section near Scanzorosciate, vineyards alternate with olive groves. This means the route can be viewed from two perspectives and establishes a clear connection between the town and its agriculturally shaped surroundings. If you plan walks and longer stretches of trail as part of your trip, this route is one of the town's defining features.

On Monte Bastia, the Chiesetta degli Alpini is a viewpoint with picnic facilities and drinking water. The Quadrifoglio cycling route runs between Torre de Roveri and Scanzorosciate along minor roads and unpaved paths serving the woods and vineyards. This brings different landscapes together: the Cammino leads through vineyards and olive groves, while Quadrifoglio connects woodland and wine-growing areas via different types of paths.

Moscato di Scanzo and regional products

A culinary connection with Scanzorosciate is Moscato di Scanzo. This is a red passito wine made from the indigenous grape variety of the same name. To produce it, carefully selected grapes are dried for at least 21 days after harvesting. This precisely described production process is just as important to understanding the wine as its connection with Scanzorosciate.

The headquarters of the Consorzio Moscato di Scanzo DOCG is located at Via F. Martinengo Colleoni 38, 24020 Scanzorosciate. A tasting of the fine passito wine is possible there. A tour in Scanzorosciate also includes a visit to a local farm with a cellar tour and a tasting of typical products associated with Moscato di Scanzo. For travellers who want to get to know regional products in more than passing, wine can thus be combined with a specific on-site experience.

Roman origins and historic gardens

Scanzo has Roman origins. Another highlight is Villa Pagnoncelli Folcieri: it has a 17th-century main building, a medieval corner tower and 18th-century frescoes. The estate also includes an English garden and a rear green area that preserves its Italian garden design with boxwood hedges.

Festival in September and getting there

The traditional Festa del Moscato di Scanzo takes place in September and includes tastings, excursions and events.

Scanzorosciate can be reached via the A4 Milano–Venezia motorway; you can use the Bergamo or Seriate exits. This access route complements the various ways of structuring your visit according to your interests: with wine and tastings, with culture and gardens, or with a section of the Cammino del Vescovado or the Quadrifoglio cycling route.
