Valbondione appeals to travelers who want to combine mountain trails, impressive waterscapes and local history in a single Italian destination. When choosing your accommodation, it is particularly useful to consider which trails and destinations you plan to visit: the municipality and its districts offer various starting points for nature and cultural experiences.

Waterscapes around Valbondione

The Cascate del Serio are 315 meters high in total and consist of three drops. The Cascate del Coca are located in Valbondione. Above Valbondione, there is also Lago del Barbellino, an artificial reservoir in the former Barbellino basin. It is the largest artificial lake in the Bergamasque Orobie and gives the landscape a distinctly alpine character.

Hiking trails to Maslana and the Cascate del Serio

From the district of Grumetti, CAI trail 332 crosses the Ponte della Piccinella bridge to the Osservatorio Floro Faunistico di Maslana and continues into the Grandi Macigni area. From there, the Cascate del Serio are visible. Maslana can be reached on foot via CAI trail 332 or CAI trail 305. This allows you to incorporate different routes into your personal day plan.

Another access route to the Cascate del Serio leads from Via Curò in Valbondione via the signposted CAI trail 305 toward Rifugio Curò and the Grandi Macigni area. You do not have to continue all the way to the refuge. The easy hike to the Diga del Barbellino begins in Valbondione, follows CAI trail 305 toward Rifugio Antonio Curò and is 6.5 km long. The various starting points and the explicitly stated route length help you plan your hiking day according to your own interests.

History in Contrada Bondione

The Chiesina di Santa Elisabetta is located in Contrada Bondione, within the municipality of Valbondione. It was built between 1647 and 1659 and houses an altarpiece by Domenico Carpinoni depicting the Visitation of Mary to Saint Elizabeth. The feast of Santa Elisabetta is celebrated on May 31; in Contrada Bondione, the celebration takes place on the third Sunday in July with a mass, a procession and an outdoor lunch.

In the municipality of Valbondione, the Sentiero dei Carbonai e dei Poiat explains the historical production of charcoal as well as the construction and operation of the “Poiat” at 19 marked stations. The route thus brings a specific chapter of local working history into the landscape and complements the hiking destinations with a cultural and historical dimension.

Valbondione as a base and place to stay

The Pista ciclabile della Valle Seriana begins in Ranica and ends after 60 km in Valbondione; it follows the riverbed of the Serio. If you choose Valbondione as your place to stay, you can include this endpoint, as well as the hikes beginning in the town, in your personal plans. The trails to Maslana, the Diga del Barbellino and in the direction of the Cascate del Serio offer different thematic focuses, without requiring you to limit your trip to just one activity.
