Albogasio: Historic Paths, Churches and Villas
Albogasio combines a structured settlement layout with buildings of cultural and historical significance and historic paths. The surrounding area is home to mountains and other regional destinations; churches, villas and a themed walking tour connected with “Piccolo Mondo Antico” are also part of the character of the village.
The settlement layout with stairways and a landing stage
Albogasio is divided into an upper and a lower village. The two areas are connected by numerous steep stairways. Anyone travelling between Albogasio Superiore and Albogasio Inferiore should plan for the stairways as part of the route. The stairways must be taken into account as a separate section when physically planning a route between the two parts of the village. Albogasio Inferiore also has a boat landing stage. In addition to the stairway connections, this landing stage is therefore also part of the character of the lower village.
Lakeside paths and historic connections
A lakeside mule track connects Albogasio Inferiore with Oria. The Calcinera is a historic mule track on the former route between Oria and San Mamete. It has 120 steps. Oria is both the destination of the lakeside mule track and part of the former route via the Calcinera. When planning the route, the 120 steps of the Calcinera must be taken into account as a separate ascent.
Villas and churches in Albogasio
In Albogasio Superiore, Villa Salve was designed by the architect Isidoro Affaitati, who came from Valsolda. Also in Albogasio Superiore is the Church of Sant'Ambrogio, which dates from the 15th or 16th century. In 1680, Stefano Vignola decorated its interior with frescoes depicting the story of the saint. The Church of Santa Margherita has a single-nave layout; the nave and presbytery are covered by barrel vaults.
The literary walking tour to Oria
A themed walking tour begins in Albogasio Inferiore, taking in the places described in “Piccolo Mondo Antico”. The tour ends with a visit to Villa Fogazzaro Roi in Oria. The route therefore leads from Albogasio Inferiore to Oria and connects the two stops through their shared literary theme. Villa Fogazzaro Roi still contains furnishings from its period.
