Livo combines its historic centre with surroundings shaped by chestnut forests and paths around Dangri. Travellers seeking not only sights but also established local structures and landscapes during a trip to Italy will find different ways to experience the area here: in the village, churches, frescoes and rural houses take centre stage; outside it, paths lead towards Val Darengo and Val di Bares.

Historic Villagescape and Sacred Art

The historic centre of Livo features an old settlement structure made up of parallel streets. Right-angled lanes connect them while following the slope of the hillside. Typical rural houses include stone buildings with wooden balconies and carved doors. Their façades are decorated with votive frescoes from the 16th century. Stone, wood and religious imagery thus shape various facets of the villagescape.

The Chiesa San Giacomo Vecchia was first mentioned in documents in 1297. The vault of its pronaos contains frescoes depicting scenes from Genesis dating from the second half of the 16th century. Its side walls and the pillars of the nave preserve numerous devotional frescoes from the first half of the 16th century. They depict Mary, Christ, God the Father and saints from popular tradition. In the centre of Livo there is also the Chiesa di San Giacomo Nuova, which was built in the 17th century.

Signposted Paths and Valleys

The Via dei Monti Lariani, Trail 4, is marked with red-white-red signs. On stones, the markings appear as painted stripes; on tree trunks and walls, they appear as aluminium markers. They bear the numbers 1 to 4. Stage 4 of the Via dei Monti Lariani leads from Garzeno to Peglio through the Valli di Liro, S. Jorio and Dosso, as well as through rural villages that have remained largely intact.

Towards Dangri and Val Darengo

From Livo, access is via the road to Crotto Dangri. A €1 toll applies, and after a further 3 km you can park your car in Dangri. From Dangri, hiking trails lead towards Val Darengo, its alpine lake and the wild Val di Bares. The canyoning route in Val di Bares begins in Dangri near Livo and initially follows the path through Val di Bares to the starting point.

On the way to Capanna Como, after around 30 minutes on foot you reach the Madonna di Livo sanctuary at an altitude of 745 m. Capanna Como stands on a rocky spur south of Lago Darengo. Online reservation and payment are required; you will then receive an access code valid for the date specified in the booking. The combination of sanctuary, forest paths and a destination at Lago Darengo appeals to visitors who want to combine culture and activity.

Natural Environment and Rural Life

Traditional pastoral activities continue to play an important role in Livo. These include keeping sheep, goats and cattle. Not far from Livo, paths lead through the forests of Monte Sasso Pelo, from which the Insubric Line can be seen. In this way, the natural environment and rural work stand alongside the historic villagescape as further aspects of the village.
