Zelbio: Hiking Trails, Views and Culture in the Triangolo Lariano
Hiking between the lake and the mountains
Zelbio is located in the Triangolo Lariano, whose hiking trails and paths offer impressive views between the lake and the mountains. The landscape is revealed not only through far-reaching vistas, but also at distinctive sites and historic buildings. If you are planning your trip to Italy independently, you can therefore get to know Zelbio from different perspectives: on walks, while taking in views of the mountain and lake landscape, or through the history of the village.
Pian del Tivano and its views
Pian del Tivano is a broad plain extending across the municipalities of Zelbio, Nesso and Sormano. The Big Sunset Bench in Zelbio is located on this plain. From the Big Sunset Bench, you can see the Como Triangle and Monte San Primo.
Paths, gorge and open spaces
The Ponte di Ferro is a historic footbridge over a wooded gorge carved out by the stream. It is located on a mule track above Zelbio and is therefore one of the specific landscape features that can be associated with hiking. Fracia is public pastureland in the Pian del Tivano locality and serves as a starting point for walks and outdoor events. Around Zelbio, you will therefore encounter both wooded sections of trail and open spaces.
Churches with different histories
The village’s buildings also create their own historical accents. The Chiesa dell’Addolorata e dei Santi Primo e Feliciano has medieval origins. The Conversione di San Paolo church was built between 1593 and 1617 and elevated to an independent parish in 1617. The Chiesa Della Madonna Immacolata was built between 1952 and 1954 and preserves a fresco by Carlo Morgari inside. The three churches therefore represent different periods within the history of the village.
Local events and regional cuisine
The connection between village life and culinary tradition includes the Sagra dei sapori e del pizzocchero, one of Zelbio’s initiatives established over the years. ZelbioCult comprises free evening events at the village theatre at 9 p.m. Both formats complement the nature and cultural themes with opportunities to experience Zelbio through regional specialities or an evening programme.
How to get to Zelbio
From Como, you can reach Zelbio via the SS583 to Nesso and then via the SP44 towards Zelbio–Pian del Tivano. An alternative route from Erba follows the SP41 and SP44. These two routes help you place Zelbio within your personal travel plans and prepare for the journey according to your starting point.
Which interests go well together
Those who enjoy exploring on foot will find several different landscapes in Zelbio and at Pian del Tivano: paths in the Triangolo Lariano, an open plain, a gorge with a historic footbridge and public pastureland. Visitors interested in culture can focus on the three churches and their different periods of construction. These are complemented by views, pizzocchero and evening events. This makes it possible to shape your stay according to your own rhythm, between nature, local history and regional themes.
