Lomazzo is a destination for travellers who wish to combine historical traces, Lombard architecture and experiences in nature. Archaeology, significant buildings and paths through Parco del Lura give the town a range of different facets. The themes extend from the historic townscape to the park's paths and woodland areas.
Archaeological and Political Traces
Archaeological finds from the Iron Age provide evidence of settlements in Lomazzo as early as the 6th to 5th century BC. The archaeological remains also include a Roman necropolis from the 1st century BC. Another Roman testimony is a votive inscription to the Matrons of Titus Sestius Agatho. Political history is also associated with the town: in Lomazzo, delegations from Milan and Como concluded peace negotiations in 1249 and 1286. The peace negotiations complement the archaeological evidence with a medieval chapter in the town's history.
Architecture and Art in Lomazzo
The Palazzo Arconati was the seat of the former praetorium. The present-day Chiesa di San Vito is an example of Lombard neoclassical architecture and was designed around 1790 by the Ticinese architect Simone Cantoni. At the Palazzo, its former political function is the main focus, while at San Vito it is the neoclassical design.
The Museo Puthod in Lomazzo Town Hall houses significant works by the painter Dolores Puthod. The Villa Somaini complex includes Villa Somaini, Villa Raimondi-Carcano and various ancillary buildings. The Cotonificio Somaini adds an example of industrial history: despite its restoration, it retains its original appearance and is considered an example of 19th-century industrial archaeology. The architectural range therefore extends to the villas and industrial history.
Landscape of Parco del Lura
Lomazzo is one of the nine municipalities whose territory is touched by Parco del Lura. The park's landscape includes oak and black locust forests, surviving pine forests, riparian woodland and land used for agriculture. In the village of Bissago, avenues lined with lime trees, Lombardy poplars, plane trees and maple trees define an area typical of the historic Lombard agricultural landscape. Visitors to the park encounter woodland, avenues and agricultural land.
Trails, Cycling and Excursion Destinations
North of Bissago, trails lead through the pine forest to the Ponte degli Alpini. From Bissago, Cascina Menegardo to the east can be reached via trails. Bissago is the reference point for both routes. The cycle path in Parco del Lura is suitable for cycling tourism through the Lombard landscape.
Practical Information for Your Stay
Free access to the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Siro is available during opening hours. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Siro is therefore a separate point of interest in the town.
