Sacred Art and Local History

The Chiesa parrocchiale San Salvatore offers a particularly detailed insight into the history of the village. The first documents proving its independence as a parish date from 1644. Inside, visitors will find Baroque furnishings with frescoes, canvas paintings, stucco and works of art by various artists from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church's dedication is probably connected with the Byzantine influence in the Alto Lario region at that time.

Another sacred highlight in Vercana is located in the hamlet of Caino: the Chiesa di San Sebastiano (Caino) stands there in a panoramic position. It was built in 1644 over a building dating approximately from 1400. The church also houses an organ by Giuseppe Alchisio from 1862.

The Santuario Madonna della Neve was built in 1630 after the end of the plague. It was erected at the unanimous request of the survivors and is regarded as a sign of devotion to the Madonna and gratitude to God. Its reason for construction distinguishes it from the two churches.

The Monti di Vercana route follows paved roads to the Monti di Vercana, then continues along an unpaved mountain track and an old, partly paved path. For cycling travellers, there is also a challenging cross-country cycling route: it follows a section of the Via dei Monti Lariani through the valleys and leads from the Monti di Vercana via Tabbiadello and Montalto to Fordeccia. At Azienda agricola Runchee, a 30-minute educational tour of the old mill, including a demonstration of how it works, can be booked on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with advance reservation. At least two people take part in this experience. This provides a clearly defined time slot for your planning.

From September to November, a one-hour tour covering the chestnut's life cycle from harvesting to processing can be booked daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Azienda agricola Runchee with advance reservation. At least five people take part. For individual planning, the two appointments differ significantly: the mill tour is set for Saturday morning, while the chestnut tour is available from September to November. The minimum group sizes also differ: at least two people are required for the mill tour and at least five for the chestnut tour.
