Maggio between mountain landscapes and local history

Maggio combines the mountain trails around Monte Due Mani with the parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Maggio di Cremeno. The parish church was built in the 17th century. Inside, it preserves frescoes by Romeo Rivetta and Arturo Galli, paintings by Giancarlo Vitali, sculptures by Enrico Manfrini, and a modern organ made by the Mascioni company. The furnishings combine sacred architecture, art and regional history.

Hiking trails around Monte Due Mani

Maggio serves as a starting point for Monte Due Mani, with its distinctive igloo-shaped bivouac. The circular route to the summit via Zucco di Desio begins in the hamlet of Casere in Maggio. From there, it leads over Monte Tabor and along the hamlet of La Foppa to Zucco di Desio at 1,651 metres. The trail then reaches the summit of Monte Due Mani along a panoramic ridge. The landscape is typically pre-Alpine: the trail runs through pastures as well as beech and birch forests.

At the summit of Monte Due Mani, the Bivacco Locatelli, with its domed shape, defines the appearance of the site. The “Anello basso Maggio/ Valle Desio” circular route is classified as a tourist trail, has an elevation gain of 166 metres and takes one hour. The one-hour loop with 166 metres of elevation gain combines a limited time frame with an ascent along the circular route.

Routes starting and ending in Maggio

The “Anello basso Maggio/ Valle Desio” begins and ends in Maggio. Along the way, it passes through the hamlets of Tonalli di Sopra, Valle Dongoli, Valle Desio, Canale Guzzi and Fonte di S. Lorenzo, and then returns to Tonali di Sopra. Returning to the starting point makes the route easy to incorporate into your day plan, without requiring an additional connection between different starting points.

Another option is the “Anello da Maggio alla Culmine di San Pietro” circular route. It begins in Maggio at the Fontana di San Lorenzo and follows a predominantly unpaved road through the hamlet of Ussola to the pastures of the pass. This route can be extended as far as the Piani di Artavaggio.

Crossing to the hamlet of Maggio

The Ponte della Vittoria leads to the hamlet of Maggio and can be crossed 96 m above the Torrente Pioverna.

Also accessible by bicycle

The SI-C D14S-B route is fully accessible by bicycle. It leads downhill through the Valle del Torrente Ferrera towards the village of Maggio. In addition to the circular hiking routes, this also makes it possible to include a cycling route through the valley area in your day plan.
