Casargo between mountain nature and Romanesque history

If you would like to combine mountain landscapes, trails and historic religious buildings on your trip to Italy, Casargo offers several specific points of interest. The Chiesa di San Martino, Santa Margherita and San Bernardino lead through different eras, while Monte Muggio, Alpe Giumello and various circular trails provide the landscape setting. Churches and religious history

The Chiesa di San Martino is mentioned in the Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani from 1266. Its history goes back even further: it was originally built as a church near an 11th-century military tower. Thus, a written reference from the 13th century and an architectural connection with the Middle Ages come together in a single building.

Santa Margherita stands just outside Somadino on a rocky spur called Sasso della Guardia. It is considered the oldest religious building in Valsassina and preserves Romanesque forms throughout the entire building. It also contains the only surviving Romanesque fresco in Valsassina.

San Bernardino also combines several historical layers. The building began in the 15th century as a single-nave oratory. Today, it houses frescoes by Giovan Maria Tagliaferri; the main altar dates from 1824. Mountain nature around Casargo

A distinctive natural feature is the Faggio Centenario di Piancone, a monumental beech tree measuring 28 metres in height, more than 9 metres in circumference and over 600 years old. From Località Faedo, it can be reached via a trail that leads through Ronco into Val Marcia.

Monte Muggio reaches an elevation of 1,799 metres; the summit cross stands on this peak. Sant'Ulderico can be reached via a hiking trail from Alpe Giumello.

Circular trails, cycling routes and winter activities

The Anello del Monte Muggio is a circular trail that reaches the 1,799-metre-high summit via the panoramic cross. Another trail option is the Sentiero dei mirtilli: this circular route passes through several areas with wild-growing bilberries and different types of vegetation found in the region.

For cycling enthusiasts, the Percorso dei faggi begins at the car park in Indovero, a hamlet of Casargo, and follows the ridge to Monte Muggio. The Indovero–Alpe Giumello mountain bike route is designated as an easy route, takes 1 hour and 20 minutes, and also begins in Indovero, the hamlet of Casargo.

At Alpe Giumello, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and sledding are available as activities. Mountain huts and agriturismi there also offer typical dishes and local products. Alpe Giumello thus combines sporting activities with regional cuisine that you can include in your travel plans.
