Lake, hills and paths

Oggiono lies between Lake Annone and the moraine hills of Alta Brianza. The hilly area of Imberido stretches to Lake Annone, while a moraine ridge near the old town centre separates the plain of Oggiono from the lake. Circular route around Lake Annone

The Ciclopedonale del Lago di Annone runs as an approximately 14-kilometre circular route around the lake. The path is easy and accessible for cyclists and pedestrians, offering a close-up experience of Lake Annone. On the eastern shore, the route leads towards Oggiono through woods and past old villas set amid greenery. It therefore provides a clearly defined option for anyone wishing to include exercise and scenery in their days by the lake.

Sacred art and architectural history

The Battistero San Giovanni is an octagonal building dating from the 11th century. It stands on an early Christian complex with a square floor plan dating from the 6th century; its foundations and cocciopesto floor are still visible. Fragments of 13th- and 14th-century frescoes can be found in the apse. The Chiesa Sant'Agata dates from the first quarter of the 18th century and has two rooms arranged one above the other. The upper choir room was used by confraternities for a long time.

During the restoration of the Chiesa Sant'Agata, earlier frescoes depicting saints were uncovered; they may date from the 16th century. Its apse contains ivory-coloured stucco. In the Chiesa Santa Marzia, a niche contains an urn with the mortal remains of Saint Marzia; two reliquaries stand beside it. The Polittico dell’Assunta is also kept in the provost church of Oggiono.

Historical traces in the districts

Above Imberido, the Capitani had a castle built during the feudal period. Above Laguccio, the remains of a Castellazzo have survived; Villa Sironi stands there. At the eastern entrance to the hamlet of Castello, the portal and defensive tower of the Castello dei Perachi have been preserved and incorporated into later buildings. Also in Castello, the remains of the medieval channelisation of the Torrente Daverio can be seen, along with a well-preserved route.

In Bagnolo e Lago, there is an elaborately designed old washhouse from the 18th century, restored by the municipal administration. The chimney of the former silk mill belonging to the Donegana family is a monument to the period of modernisation. A discovered votive inscription dedicated to the god Mercury, the patron god of trade and travellers, suggests the route of the important ancient Roman road Via Ulteria e dei Laghi.

Market square and recurring traditions

In 1820, the market was permanently moved to Piazza Manzoni, which thereby became Oggiono's permanent market square. The Fiera di Sant’Andrea is a recurring market tradition: it takes place on the last Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays in October and dates back to a market charter granted in 1614. These two local references show how the market and public space have been connected throughout Oggiono's history.

Oggiono's railway station is called Stazione di Oggiono. Oggiono is connected by regional services, bus transport and rail connections on the Como–Lecco route. The Ippocastano di Oggiono is approximately 30 metres high, has a trunk circumference of more than 4.5 metres and stands beside the Chiesetta del Lazzaretto di Oggiono.
