Barzio between its mountain landscape and local history

Barzio can be explored from several perspectives: through a museum in a former brickworks, sacred architecture, a national monument and a regional speciality. Piani di Bobbio is a ski resort in Valsassina; a modern gondola lift connects Barzio with Piani di Bobbio. The thematic scope therefore extends from the history of local work and landscapes through art and church architecture to winter sports, mountaineering and traditional cuisine.

Museums with a local and regional perspective

The “La Fornace” Museum is located in the plain known as Prato-buscante between Barzio and Pasturo. It is housed in a former brickworks dating from 1890. Its sections focus on local products, agriculture, hiking, the beginnings of skiing, mineralogy, palaeontology and geomorphology. The upper floor presents the fauna and vegetation of lakeside and subalpine habitats. The thematic scope thus ranges from natural habitats to the activities and products associated with the region.

The Medardo Rosso Museum is also part of Barzio’s cultural history. It was founded in Barzio in a 17th-century building. Together with the “La Fornace” Museum, it reveals different historical layers of the town without reducing Barzio to a single theme.

Church, art and places of remembrance

The Church of Sant’Alessandro in Barzio has a single-nave interior in the shape of a Latin cross. The space is covered by a barrel vault and a dome over the crossing; there are also four side chapels. Archaeological excavations beneath an altar uncovered a quadrangular apse dating from the early Middle Ages. On 10 September 1933, the church was consecrated by Cardinal Ildefonso Schuster. The portal features bronze doors made by Piero Maggioni in 1985 for the Manzoni anniversary.

Palazzo Manzoni has been a national monument since 1930.

Piani di Bobbio and Barzio’s mountain themes

Piani di Bobbio is a ski resort in Valsassina. A modern gondola lift connects Barzio with Piani di Bobbio. In the early Middle Ages, the Piani di Bobbio area was used by the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio for summer grazing of its livestock. The Campelli group has via ferratas for experienced mountaineers, which have recently been restored.

Cabiadini: a speciality from Barzio

Cabiadini are traditional biscuits from Barzio made according to an old recipe. In the rest of the valley, they are known as Caviadini and are sold there. Alongside museums, churches and mountain-related themes, anyone wishing to discover local products will find a tangible connection to Barzio and its regional cuisine in this pastry.
