Cavriana between pile-dwelling history and village center

Cavriana combines history, sacred art and landscape within a small area. The town preserves traces of a fortified village, leads to archaeological themes and offers quiet streets for easy walks and cycling tours.

Historic Center and Villa Mirra

Cavriana has preserved the original structure of a fortified village. Through a gate, you reach a small square with two 16th-century palaces. The surviving parts of Cavriana Castle include the surrounding walls, an original entrance gate and a watchtower. In the 17th century, the latter was converted into a bell tower.

Villa Mirra also contains several layers of history. It was extensively remodeled around 1770 and rebuilt using materials from the demolished old castle and its fortification walls. Villa Mirra houses the Museo Archeologico dell'Alto Mantovano. The museum displays finds from the pile-dwelling sites of Bande di Cavriana and Castellaro Lagusello.

Archaeology and Landscape

The Bande di Cavriana pile-dwelling site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. It is located in a glacially formed lake basin in the moraine amphitheater of Lake Garda. In Cavriana, archaeological evidence and a distinctive landscape form therefore meet directly, without requiring you to separate the two themes.

The surrounding area also includes the SCI site “Moraine Complex of Castellaro Lagusello”. It covers approximately 271 hectares in the municipal areas of Mozambano and Cavriana. The approximate area figure retains the character of an order of magnitude and does not indicate an exact boundary for planning your trip.

Sacred Art and a Long History

In the sacristy of Santa Maria Nova, there is a 1512 triptych of the Madonna with Saints Sebastian and Roch, attributed to Zenone Veronese. Cavriana's parish church is first mentioned in a historical document dated March 31, 1037.

Santa Maria della Pieve is also known as Santuario della Madonna della Pieve and is a well-preserved Romanesque building on a gentle slope in Cavriana. Another historical testimony is the Fontana del Torcolo: the old washhouse is fed by a natural spring that flows year-round. During the Renaissance, the Fontana del Torcolo was an important geographical and defensive landmark connected to Cavriana's upper fortress.

Walking, Cycling and Route Sections

Cavriana's quiet streets invite you to take easy walks and cycling tours. Near the archaeological museum, there are accessible parking spaces and sidewalks with lowered curbs. The first stage of the Via Carolingia runs from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Cavriana. The ninth stage of the Cammino di Fede e Solidarietà runs from Cavriana via Castellaro Lagusello to Monzambano.

Rituals, Festivals and Local Products

On February 3, an old ritual for blessing the throat takes place in Cavriana. During it, the priest holds two crossed candles under the chin in the church. The Palio della Capra d'Oro takes place in Cavriana on the second Sunday in July. Its program begins in the historic center with a procession of the Contrade. At the Cavrodromo, the program includes a flag-waving performance, the traditional goat race and the presentation of the award to the winning Contrada.

For the Antica Fiera di San Biagio 2026, stalls with local products and offerings from craft businesses were planned in the lower garden of Villa Mirra.
