Barche di Solferino: Bronze Age, Landscape and Cycling Routes

Barche di Solferino is a destination for travellers who do not want to view the Italian landscape and its far-reaching history separately. At its centre is a settlement near the shore dating from the Early and Middle Bronze Age, dated to the 21st to 14th centuries BC. In the wider surroundings of the municipality of Solferino, wetlands, ponds, small lakes and peat bogs in lower-lying areas complement the landscape. This gives you clearly distinguishable points of connection between archaeology, nature and regional cuisine. Bronze Age Settlement and Its History

The settlement of Barche di Solferino was identified in the peat bog of the same name in the second half of the 19th century. A large part of the settlement was destroyed during extraction in the local pit. Barche di Solferino is regarded as one of the best-known Bronze Age settlements in Europe. At the same time, it is considered a prehistoric settlement on a wooden platform or drainage structure.

In 1938, Francesco Zorzi carried out a systematic excavation in Barche and documented the surviving remains of the settlement. Photographs of these excavations show the impressive wooden construction. Barche di Solferino is one of the pile-dwelling sites of eastern Lombardy associated with the Polada cultural horizon. Numerous pieces of coarse pottery from Barche di Solferino in the Museo di Storia Naturale di Verona are considered typical of the Polada culture. The museum also houses a cast of a wooden spoked wheel associated with Barche di Solferino.

Solferino Between Monuments and Museum

The municipality of Solferino’s historic monumental complex includes the museum, the Cappella Ossario, the Rocca and the Memoriale della Croce Rossa. The municipality’s historical focus therefore extends beyond the Bronze Age settlement and also encompasses the distinctive components of the later monumental complex.

For practical planning, an important timing note is that the Sala di Preistoria Veronese has been temporarily closed to the public since 4 June 2026 for renovation and redesign work. Admission prices are listed for visits to the museum and Rocca in Solferino.

Routes, Landscape and Regional Cuisine

The circular route “Da Solferino a Castiglione delle Stiviere, luoghi della battaglia risorgimentale” passes through the Barche di Solferino settlement and begins and ends at Piazza Castello in Solferino. The cycling circuit “Tra Napoleone Bonaparte a Napoleone III” follows minor roads from Castiglione via Barche to Solferino. Both routes place Barche in a historical context extending from sites of the Risorgimento to the names of Napoleone Bonaparte and Napoleon III.

The cuisine of the municipality of Solferino includes Capunsèl di Solferino, a tasty bread dumpling served as a first course. This dish adds a specific culinary connection to the municipality to the archaeological, historical and landscape themes.
