Sustinente between the Po floodplains and history

Sustinente between the Po floodplains and history

Sustinente combines a long settlement history with sacred art, historic buildings and a distinctive riverside landscape. The village was founded around the year 1000 by monks from San Benedetto Po. They cultivated wooded, undeveloped land. This early history shapes the cultural context of the place, while the Parco Golenale along the Po provides a natural setting to complement it.

Church art and Baroque architecture

The present-day architecture of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 18th century. The church houses the painting “San Michele e una Santa Lucia e Filomena” by Giulio Cesare Arrivabene. Architecture and painting can therefore be viewed here as two directly interconnected aspects of the local cultural history.

In Sacchetta, the Church of the Annunciation displays Baroque features. Its altarpiece is attributed to Ippolito Scarsella, who was also known as lo Scarsellino. This provides you with another focus of art history, distinct from the architecture of the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, without requiring the two subjects to be conflated.

Historic buildings and agriculture

Villa Guerrieri Gonzaga was built around 1650. The Corte Restara agricultural operation is based at the villa and produces grapes, mainly red ones. In addition to its construction date, Villa Guerrieri Gonzaga is therefore also associated with a local agricultural operation and mainly red grapes. Also on the island of Sacchetta, Castello Maggiorasco was built in 1288. Three of the original thirteen towers of Castello Maggiorasco have been incorporated into the private Villa Malbona, which is also known as Ca' Mazzocchi.

Po floodplains and semi-natural vegetation

The Parco Golenale along the Po encompasses the floodplain areas of Sustinente and stretches between the main embankment and the banks of the Po. Semi-natural vegetation occurs particularly around wetlands and river islands.

Regional destinations for different interests

The wider region around Sustinente is home to Palazzo Soardi, a palace, the Museo storico dei vigili del fuoco, a museum, the Castle of Saint George, a castle, and Palazzo Ducale, a palace. There are also several gardens: Giardini di Piazza Anconetta, Giardini Marani, Giardini di Piazza Lega Lombarda and Giardini di Piazza Virgiliana. The range of regional themes therefore extends from palace architecture and museum culture to gardens and historic complexes.

San Rocco Festival in August
