Monzambano: Castle, Nature and Cycle Paths along the Mincio

Monzambano between Castle and Moraine Landscape

Monzambano combines a village setting on a hilltop with medieval architecture, traces of prehistoric settlements and a protected landscape. The Chiesa San Michele and the medieval castle together shape the village of around 5,000 inhabitants. The castle and the Chiesa San Michele define the village; in Castellaro Lagusello, traces of prehistoric settlements and the protected moraine landscape add to them.

Castle and Churches as Historical Landmarks

The Castello Scaligero di Monzambano is the oldest part of the town and stands on its hilltop. The present complex was built by the Scaligeri towards the end of the 13th century and was created by expanding a smaller earlier castle dating back to the 12th century. Today, Castello di Monzambano is considered one of the best-preserved and most complete examples of castle architecture in the Mantuan area.

The entrance tower of Castello Scaligero di Monzambano houses a multimedia museum. It is dedicated to the material culture, traditions and cultural, historical, ethnographic, rural and archaeological heritage of the area. Smaller religious buildings are also part of the local history: Chiesa di San Pietro is a rural little church on a hill in the surroundings of Monzambano. It can be reached via an old stone staircase lined with a row of cypress trees.

In the hamlet of Olfino, Chiesa Santissima Trinità has retained its medieval Romanesque character despite numerous restorations. Two fresco cycles from the 16th century add to the historic character of this building. The castle, museum, Chiesa San Michele and Chiesa Santissima Trinità thus form the historical landmarks of Monzambano and Olfino.

Castellaro Lagusello and Traces of Early Settlements

Castellaro Lagusello is a fortified village near a small lake of glacial-moraine origin. Its fortification walls, four towers, parts of the rampart walk and two medieval farmhouses have remained almost completely intact. The settlement at Fondo Tacoli is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pile-dwelling settlements of Castellaro Lagusello also include Bronze Age settlements at Fondo Tacoli and Fondo Pezzalunga.

The Sito di Tosina in Monzambano also reaches far back into prehistory: it is a prehistoric settlement site dating from the Middle to Late Neolithic. The Tosina settlement preserves well-preserved domestic structures and settlement features across extensive terraces.

Lake, Forest and Wetland

In the hamlet of Castellaro Lagusello, gentle hills, meadows and orchards surround a small lake and its reserve in the moraines south of Lake Garda. The Riserva naturale di Castellaro Lagusello in the municipality of Monzambano includes a small heart-shaped lake. The protected area Complesso Morenico di Castellaro Lagusello extends over around 271 hectares across the municipalities of Monzambano and Cavriana.

The reserve includes thermophilous downy oak and black hornbeam forests on the hillsides. On the steep slopes and hilltops are dry grasslands with abundant spring blooms. In the Riserva naturale di Castellaro Lagusello, a path created by the park approaches the wetland, with one section on unpaved ground and another on a wooden boardwalk.

The landscape is also a destination for nature observation. The reserve is home to 99 recorded bird species from the groups of resident, migratory and overwintering birds, including the kingfisher.

Cycling along the Mincio

The 43-kilometre Mantova–Peschiera cycling and walking path runs along the Mincio near Monzambano, crosses the regional park and connects Mantova with Peschiera. It is part of EuroVelo 7, which is also known as the Ciclovia del Sole. Another 43-kilometre cycle path along the Mincio River passes through Ponti, Monzambano and Borghetto.
