Gaggiano: History on the Naviglio Grande and Species-Rich Landscapes
Gaggiano is closely connected to the Naviglio Grande: Its historical significance is linked to the canal, whose excavation began around 1177 and initially ended in this town. Gaggiano therefore brings together the history of water engineering, architectural heritage and a landscape shaped by waterways and agricultural areas.
History at Ponte Vecchio
Ponte Vecchio leads deep into the history of the town. Its exact construction date is unknown, but the bridge was already in use in the 14th century. In 1869, it was rebuilt in the same form as its predecessor. Palazzo Stampa Aloardi–Villa Marino is located on the left bank of the Naviglio, just a few steps from Ponte Vecchio. Castelletto di Gaggiano, a palace, is also located in the immediate vicinity of Gaggiano.
Palaces, Museums and Sacred Art
The area around Gaggiano is home to Goppion, a museum, Palazzo Cattaneo, a palace, and the Museo delle culture, a museum. Sacred art is also associated with the town: The oldest fresco in the Santuario di Sant’Invenzio is the Madonna delle Grazie. It is dated to 1388 and is probably attributed to Erghieri. In the complex of the Certosa di Vigano, the Oratorio di Sant’Ippolito contains frescoes whose execution was entrusted to Aurelio and Giovan Pietro Luini in 1578. The building and the surrounding agricultural land of the Certosa di Vigano were assigned to the Certosa di Pavia by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1400.
Landscape Between Water and Nature
For those interested in nature, the surrounding area offers several clearly distinct points of interest. The Parco Sandro Pertini and the Parco Travaglia, both parks, are located in the area around Gaggiano. The Arco della Pace and the Porta Garibaldi, both natural arches, are also located there. Lago Boscaccio is distinguished by a particularly species-rich bird and fish population. As part of the “il canneto del Lago Boscaccio” project, a wetland was created for migrating waterbirds; around 180 bird species find refuge around the lake. The Gamberina continues to serve two functions: It acts as a relief channel for the Naviglio and as an irrigation ditch, running 12 km southward. Around 24 km² of Gaggiano lies within the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano.
A Place for Different Travel Interests
Gaggiano thus combines historic waterways, bridge construction, palaces, frescoes, museums and landscapes. If you are planning a trip based on your interests, you can consider these topics separately when choosing your accommodation and planning the rest of your trip: Ponte Vecchio and the Naviglio Grande represent the town’s history, while Lago Boscaccio, the Gamberina and the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano form the landscape setting. The Piccolo Museo dei Combattenti e Reduci preserves wartime memorabilia as well as portraits of all those who died and many veterans from Gaggiano since 1915.
