Castellazzo between cultural heritage and landscape

Castellazzo combines impressive architecture, industrial history and nature trails. At its centre is Villa Arconati-FAR, regarded as cultural heritage of great historical, cultural and architectural significance. For you, this creates a destination whose character is not limited to a single focus of interest.

The garden of Villa Arconati-FAR includes a theatre and water features. At the same time, it preserves a rare example of a French garden in Italy. Anyone interested in historic garden design and formal grounds will find a particularly tangible connection to the history of Castellazzo here.

The Church of San Guglielmo is also part of the local history: it was completed in 1588.

You can also encounter historical traces along the Percorso del Castellazzo. The route passes the ruins of several kilns and an information board featuring images of the Sutter & Thévenot munitions factory, which exploded in 1918.

In Castellazzo di Bollate, the ruins of two Hoffmann kilns have been preserved. They were damaged by the explosion of 1917.

The Borgo del Castellazzo is also part of the built heritage. It consists of two courtyards with homes for farm labourers and a third courtyard with stables and haylofts.

A spacious area with changing landscapes

The extensive and varied Castellazzo di Bollate complex includes a large villa building, the Borgo, extensive woods, heathland and agricultural land. These different components make it clear why Castellazzo is interesting both from a cultural and historical perspective and as a landscape destination.

In Parco delle Groane, you can explore paths and numerous cycling routes. There, the landscape gradually changes from extensive heathlands, among the southernmost in Europe, to forests of Scots pine and birch, and finally to tall oak and hornbeam forests. Depending on your interests, you can therefore combine your stay with walks, bike rides or closer observation of nature.

The WWF Il Caloggio Oasis is connected by a laid-out and well-maintained path to the trails of Parco delle Groane near Castellazzo. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider historic destinations and routes through different landscapes as part of a single excursion focus.

Trails, culture and seasonal orientation

The Percorso del Castellazzo begins at the car park of Bollate Nord railway station. This specific starting point helps you plan a visit to the route geographically, without separating the historic sites from Castellazzo’s overall character.

The Festival di Villa Arconati is also part of the area’s cultural character. Its roots go back to the 1980s, and it has become an established summer event. If you would like to combine your trip with cultural experiences, Castellazzo therefore offers, alongside architecture and history, an event focus that is firmly rooted in the area.

For Villa Arconati-FAR, the Fondazione Augusto Rancilio began opening it to the public continuously for the first time in 2015. The opening days from March to December described at the time made it possible to visit the entire monumental garden and the rooms of the palace, partly independently and partly as part of a guided tour. This historical information describes the visiting arrangements at that time; current opening hours cannot be inferred from it.

When choosing a hotel or other accommodation for your stay in Castellazzo, you can use your personal interests as a guide: the villa, garden, church, Borgo and historical traces lend themselves to a culture-focused day plan, while Parco delle Groane and the WWF Oasis add nature, walking and cycling stages.

Further destinations: Concorezzo, Cuggiono, Bernate Ticino, Cesate, Novegro-Tregarezzo, Desio, San Colombano Al Lambro, Cinisello Balsamo.
