Opera: Mirasole Abbey, Churches and the Lamberin Wetland

Opera connects Mirasole Abbey and the churches of Saints Peter and Paul and Madonna dell’Aiuto with the Lanca del Lamberin and Parco dello Sport. At the abbey, the focus is on medieval architectural history; the churches each display their own historical and artistic features. The Lanca adds an old bend in the southern Lambro, while the sports park offers fields in the centre of Opera.

Mirasole Abbey: Foundation and Medieval Farmstead Complex

Mirasole Abbey was founded in the first half of the 13th century. Its square complex is one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval farmstead complex. The site therefore combines an early foundation date with a clearly defined square architectural form.

The church and cloister of Mirasole Abbey can be visited independently every day from Monday to Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. With this time window, the self-guided visit can be planned as a separate part of the day, while both areas clearly belong to Mirasole Abbey. Within this time window, the church and cloister can be experienced as two separate areas.

Churches in Opera: Saints Peter and Paul

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is furnished with stained-glass windows, a Stations of the Cross from 2017, and polychrome wooden statues honouring the two saints. The Stations of the Cross bring a specific year into the church interior, while the windows and wooden statues represent different forms of furnishing. The stained-glass windows, the Stations of the Cross and the wooden statues are distinct furnishing elements within the same church interior.

Madonna dell’Aiuto: Reconstruction and Portal

The Madonna dell’Aiuto church in Opera was rebuilt in 1687 on the floor plan of its predecessor church, based on a design by the architect Bartolomeo Malatesta. Its portal is decorated with bronze reliefs by the sculptor Mariano Valentini.

Lamberin: River Bend, Wetland and Nature Conservation

The Lanca del Lamberin in Opera is a long-abandoned old bend in the southern Lambro and covers approximately 23 hectares. The Lamberin wetland attracts waterbirds. As part of the spatial plan of Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, it is included in an area designated for environmental and nature conservation. At Lamberin, attention is focused on the old river bend and on waterbirds.

Parco dello Sport in the Centre of Opera

In the centre of Opera, Parco dello Sport has basketball, small-sided football and volleyball courts. The children’s area includes a picnic area and play equipment. The sports courts and the children’s area are therefore part of the same sports park, but can be considered as distinct focal points when planning a stay in the town centre. The park combines courts for several ball sports with a picnic area and play equipment.
