Ferrera Erbognone: Art, Rice Culture and Lomellina
Ferrera Erbognone between Watercourse and History
Ferrera Erbognone lies on the provincial road SP193bis between Pavia and Alessandria, between the municipalities of Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi and Lomello. The Pavia–Torre Beretti–Valenza–Alessandria railway line is also relevant for planning your journey: Ferrera Erbognone is served by this railway line. Different reference points are therefore available for travelling by car or train. The railway line also passes through Torre Beretti and Valenza. The Erbognone stream crosses the municipal area from north to south.
Archaeological and Historical Traces
Late Bronze Age artefacts dating from 1300 to 1200 BC were found along the Erbognone stream. A Roman consular road ran north of the town, connecting Ticinum (Pavia) with Augusta Taurinorum (Turin) and continuing on to Gaul. These traces link the landscape around Ferrera Erbognone with a history reaching far back into the past.
The preserved Casaforte is located in the eastern part of Ferrera Erbognone, towards Sannazzaro. It is considered the only evidence that the town was probably fortified in the Middle Ages. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the Romanesque style and preserves frescoes by the painters Villa from Vigevano and Annibale Ticinese from Semiana.
Church, Palazzo and Rural Heritage
The painting Madonna del Rosario by Guglielmo Caccia (il Moncalvo), located on the right side altar of the parish church, provides another art-historical trace. Guglielmo Caccia painted it at the end of the 16th century. Palazzo Strada preserves vaulted ceilings decorated with notable frescoes.
The historic ice house of the Strada family is a spherical brick structure. It was once used to store food and is evidence of the rural civilisation of Lomellina. Its former use as a food store is part of the historical function of this spherical brick structure. This building illustrates both the practical character of rural architecture and the connection between everyday life and regional history.
Lomellina: Rice Growing and Regional Cuisine
The municipal area of Ferrera Erbognone belongs to the UdP2 landscape unit “Lomellina: Rice-Growing Plain Shaped by the Sesia, Agogna and Terdoppio”. Along the southwestern municipal boundary of Ferrera Erbognone, landscape protection applies up to 150 metres from the banks of the Agogna. The landscape protection along the Agogna concerns a section up to 150 metres wide along the southwestern municipal boundary. The Ecomuseo del Paesaggio Lomellino is an open-air museum dedicated to the protection, enhancement and promotion of Lomellina.
The rice-growing culture is also reflected in the regional food culture. The Cesta Lomellina includes traditional cured meats, local cheeses, rice and rice products, De.Co. jams and sauces, pulses and traditional confectionery. The regional selection therefore includes not only rice products but also cured meats, cheese, pulses, sauces, jams and confectionery.
Festivals and Traditional Songs
The Sagra d'Ottobre is a gastronomic festival and religious patronal celebration of the municipality of Ferrera Erbognone. It combines the cultural tradition of Lomellina, conviviality and local gastronomy. The Sagra di Ferrera Erbognone takes place on the third Sunday in October. The major strike by the female rice weeders in Ferrera Erbognone in 1912 inspired the folk song Il 24 di maggio a Ferrera, which is also known as La canzone di Maria Provera.
