Cigognola combines historic paths, distinctive architectural heritage, a shaded park and winegrowing in the surrounding hills. This creates a place where you can combine a walk, cultural observations and an exploration of the wines of Oltrepò Pavese. This character is particularly evident along Viale Rimembranze, at Castello di Cigognola and in the Parco delle Rimembranze.
Viale Rimembranze as a pedestrian link
Viale Rimembranze serves both as a memorial route and a panoramic walking path. It leads from Piazza Castello to the Parco delle Rimembranze and runs as a historic, tree-lined pedestrian connection through landscaped grounds. Access is exclusively on foot. Plan this section as a dedicated walking route and combine it with your tour of the area's history.
A water point in the rural landscape
The Pozzo di Talanca is a historic old water point dating from the 19th century, formerly used for agricultural purposes. It lies along a panoramic path in the local rural landscape. The Pozzo can be reached via the public unpaved municipal road “di Talanca”, which branches off from the village of Ca’ Nova.
Castello and Parco delle Rimembranze
At the beginning of the 13th century, the Sannazzaro family built Castello di Cigognola as a military watchpost. It was intended to protect the Valle Scuropasso and the trade routes between the hills of Oltrepò and the Po Valley. At the beginning of the 19th century, the complex was extensively restored and redesigned in the Gothic Revival style. This phase added, among other features, the square tower, the Ghibelline battlements and the terracotta decorations on the portals.
The Parco delle Rimembranze adjoins Castello di Cigognola and is shaded by centuries-old horse chestnut trees and Lebanese cedars. At the centre of the park stands the Monumento ai Caduti delle due Guerre Mondiali. For a tour with a cultural focus, architectural history, parkland and commemorative culture are therefore brought together directly in one cohesive local setting.
Historic centre and accessibility
The Chiesa di San Bernardo Abate di Chiaravalle is located on Via Ugo Giorgi in the historic centre of Cigognola. It was built in 1623 at the request of Pope Urban VIII and restored in the 18th century. When planning around different interests, specific accessibility information is also relevant: the entrance to the Oratorio di San Rocco is accessible to people with disabilities. This information applies exclusively to the entrance of the Oratorio di San Rocco.
Winegrowing and special openings
The hills around Cigognola have been used for winegrowing for centuries and produce the Oltrepò Pavese designations Bonarda, Buttafuoco and Sangue di Giuda. Castello di Cigognola is a private residence of the Moratti family. During the Giornate FAI and special cultural events, it has been opened for guided interior visits and tastings of the estate's wines. Tastings can be reserved in the castle hall or in the sales room. The combination of winegrowing, architectural history and the Castello's special openings gives Cigognola a clearly recognisable profile for a stay focused on culture and cuisine.
