Costa del Vento as a viewpoint

At the belvedere, also known as Costa del Vento, stands the yellow Panchina Gigante di Montalto Pavese No. 161. From there, it offers a 360-degree panorama of the Apennines, the Alps and the Po Valley. Costa del Vento is also a starting point for excursions on foot, by bicycle and by motorbike. The approximately three-kilometre-long Sentiero delle Farfalle branches off from Costa del Vento.

In spring and summer, the Sentiero delle Farfalle is populated by butterflies. Since 2020, IOLAS has established a transect there for the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (eBMS), a Europe-wide, publicly supported citizen-science initiative. The wind conditions at Costa del Vento have made the site a reference point for free flight.

Culture between castles, churches and museums

Castello di Montalto Pavese was built in 1593 as an imposing hilltop castle in the hills above Casteggio. It is privately owned and is currently not open to visitors.

The Museo delle Api is housed in the historic Palazzo Cristina and dedicated to the local beekeepers Zelindo Martii and Carlo Perotti. Through an educational tour, equipment and beekeeping clothing, it illustrates the development of beekeeping techniques in the 20th century.

In Villa Illibardi, the parish church of Santa Maria was restored in the 18th century; its origins date back further. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina was also established in Villa Illibardi in 1981. It preserves the memory of the local rural culture, traditional crafts, as well as agricultural equipment and tools.
