Montebello della Battaglia: History, Wine and the Po Plain

Ecclesiastical and Ancient History

The Chiesa Parrocchiale dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio is a parish church dating from the 17th century. Palazzo Dal Pozzo is a former monastery from the 16th to the 17th century. In the Early Middle Ages, a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saints Gervase and Protase was founded in Montebello. The town developed around this monastery. Its Roman past goes back even further: Montebello was home to a Roman settlement, probably a villa, that depended on the nearby town of Clastidium (Casteggio).

A temporary truce near Montebello in 1175 was referred to as the Peace of Montebello. Another historical reference is the Battle of Montebello: on 9 June 1800, French troops under General Jean Lannes defeated the Austrians led by General Ott at Montebello.

Towards the end of the 15th century, Castello Beccaria was built as an aristocratic residence in Montebello, the Beccaria fief. The town’s architectural and historical development therefore extends from the Roman settlement and Benedictine monastery to the secular residence.
