Villanova De' Beretti: Roman Traces and Cycling Routes

Villanova de' Beretti brings together Roman land surveying, rural local history, and various cycling routes. The historical traces range from the geometric axes of Roman centuriation to routes connecting Villanova de' Beretti with Carpignago, Giussago, and the Certosa di Pavia.

Roman Lines in the Landscape

A third straight axis of Roman centuriation runs through Villanova de' Beretti. The centuriation axis passing through the village lies approximately 710 meters south of the second decumanus. The landscape around Villanova de' Beretti shows additional traces of Roman centuriation. The same system includes cardines running perpendicular to the axes, which are less well preserved. The centuriation in this area probably dates from the 1st century BC.

The area around Giussago also saw historical interventions in the landscape. Benedictine monks drained standing water there using an elaborate network of canals and by making use of fontanili. Roman land surveying and drainage through canals and fontanili thus represent two different forms of landscape management.

Local History and Historical Connections

From the 14th century until 1757, Villanova de' Beretti was an independent rural municipality. In 1751, the village was held as a fief by the Certosa monastery.

Via Giuseppe Di Vittorio runs through the village along the provincial road SP27. The former horse-drawn tramway is part of the broader historical context of mobility. It once connected the railway station with the monumental complex of the Certosa. As a former connection, it is part of the history of transport and must not be equated with a present-day means of transport. The road and railway line thus represent different levels of local and transport history.

On June 18, 2023, the historic cycling event “L'Ambrosiana” passed through Villanova de' Beretti as well as Carpignago, Guinzano, Liconasco, and Turago Bordone.
