Cross-country skiing between open plains and forests

Santa Caterina Valfurva offers several clearly distinct starting points for an individually planned mountain trip. On the Pista Valtellina, 5- and 10-kilometre cross-country skiing loops run at an altitude of 1,800 metres through a wide plain and dense forests. The two distances give you a simple point of reference if you would like to plan your days according to your preferred route length.

At the starting point of the Pista Valtellina is the La Fonte centre. It is run by the instructors of the cross-country skiing school and has changing rooms, showers, a waxing room, as well as separate storage areas for clothing and equipment. The marked Percorso dei Fiocchi circular trail also starts at the La Fonte centre and can be walked without a guide.

Hiking trails with different starting points

The Sentiero delle Sorgenti also leads from La Fonte through the forest to the village of Plaghera. From there, you can continue along the Sentiero Ponte delle Vacche. The Sentiero dei Forni begins in the village square and follows Via Forni along the Frodolfo River to Rifugio Forni.

Peaks and destinations in the surrounding region

The challenging Sentiero della Grande Guerra circular trail starts and ends at Rifugio Sunny Valley. The Pizzo Tresero peak is located near Santa Caterina. The Punta Pedranzini peak is located near Santa Caterina. The Cima Dosegù peak is located in the Santa Caterina area. The Cima Bianca peak is located in the Santa Caterina area. St. John's Abbey is also located in the wider surrounding region of Santa Caterina.

Cycling, ice and other activities

The Santa Caterina Outdoor Bike School in La Fonte offers individual and group courses, guided excursions and mountain bike rentals. Santa Caterina also has a natural ice rink; equipment rental is available nearby. If you do not want to limit your trip to a single activity, Santa Caterina offers both cycling-related activities and an opportunity to enjoy the ice.

Different access points for your planning

For excursions into the Valle dei Forni, Santa Caterina can be reached via a 4-kilometre asphalt road. In the village of Forni, there are large car parks from which well-signposted routes and the main hikes begin. Val Zebrù can only be accessed on foot. Car parks are available in Niblogo and Le Fantelle, a hamlet of Madonna dei Monti. These different access points may influence your planning. When choosing a hotel in Santa Caterina, it is therefore worth considering the activities you want to undertake together with their respective starting points.
