Sondrio between nature and mountain culture

Sondrio combines the alpine landscape of the province with museums, historic buildings and trails for walkers and cyclists. Depending on the focus of your trip, you can place high-altitude mountain landscapes, protected nature, regional history or Valtellina specialties at the center of your visit.

Protected areas and alpine landscapes

The province of Sondrio is home to one national park, one regional park, seven regional nature reserves, two natural monuments, three local parks of supra-municipal interest and numerous Natura 2000 sites. The network of protected areas includes Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio and Parco Regionale delle Orobie Valtellinesi. The latter covers the northern side of the mountain range, considered a link between the Lombard Alps and Pre-Alps, and characterized by endemic species and unspoiled areas of landscape.

A large part of the provincial territory lies at an altitude of over 2,000 meters. At lower elevations, meadows and coniferous forests give way to alpine grasslands, scree fields and extensive glaciers. In the protected landscapes, deer, ibex and chamois can be observed; with a little luck, bearded vultures and golden eagles can also be spotted.

Near Sondrio, the Bosco dei Bordighi nature reserve extends along the Adda. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the Sentiero Valtellina in the direction of Tirano. The trails there are mostly flat, equipped and signposted, and pass through one of the few remaining floodplain forests on the Adda floodplain.

Museums, palaces and historic trails

Castello Masegra is home to CAST, a storytelling museum dedicated to mountain culture. The castle also contains a Renaissance camera picta with a fresco cycle depicting Orlando furioso by Ariosto.

MuMiVV displays mineral collections from Valtellina and Valchiavenna. MVSA is located in Palazzo Sassi de'Lavizzari and comprises six sections covering the history and artistic expressions of the entire Valtellina. The building is wheelchair accessible and fully barrier-free. Its offerings include studios and creative workshops for children, guided tours for adults and special programs for people with disabilities.

Historic destinations also include the Santuario della Madonna della Sassella, a 15th-century sanctuary on a rocky spur on the outskirts of Sondrio, and the frescoes attributed to Andrea de Passeris from 1511. Scarpatetti is an old farming district with rural houses, typical wooden balconies and stone “involt”. On the ascent through the district to Castello Masegra, there are three small Marian chapels. Palazzo Sertoli forms part of an architecturally and artistically significant complex of three interconnected palaces around the historic Piazza Quadrivio.

Trails, water and active days

Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi encompasses fourteen valleys with trails ranging from flat stretches to steep, demanding paths. The region is associated with 70 mountain huts, as well as routes of varying durations and difficulty levels. In winter, Val Cervia is a popular area for ski touring and ski mountaineering.

The 114-kilometer Sentiero Valtellina runs from Colico to Bormio along the Adda. It is intended for walkers and cyclists as an environmentally friendly, non-motorized mobility route for leisure and recreation. Near Sondrio, it is well equipped, has many rest areas and runs almost entirely along dedicated cycle paths. Those looking for water activities can find opportunities for rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed on the Adda between Piateda and Castione Andevenno; this section is also suitable for less experienced participants.

The 70-kilometer Via dei Terrazzamenti connects Morbegno and Tirano. From Sondrio, it can be walked in either direction and is divided into 40 rest areas in total. The Sentiero dei ricordi begins at the Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte and leads to the main archaeological and rock-art sites in the municipality of Sondrio. From the center of Cedrasco, a specially designated gravel access road leads to Rifugio Rododendro at an altitude of 1,265 meters.

Getting there, accommodation and regional specialties

When choosing your hotel or another type of accommodation, the region’s different highlights can provide useful guidance: Sondrio itself combines cultural attractions with trails, while the province is characterized by protected areas and alpine landscapes. The SS38 dello Stelvio state road passes through Morbegno, Sondrio and Tirano before continuing to Bormio and the Stelvio Pass. A provincial road also leads from Sondrio into Valmalenco.

Regional cuisine is also part of planning your trip. Restaurants and bistros along the Via dei Terrazzamenti offer set menus featuring Pizzoccheri and Sciatt. Regional specialties include Bresaola PGI and the Valtellina Bitto and Casera cheeses.
