Arsago Seprio between archaeology, churches and landscapes

Arsago Seprio is an interesting destination if you would like to discover the history of an Italian town not only through major buildings, but also through archaeological traces, sacred details and natural landscapes. The garden of the Museo Civico Archeologico e Paleontologico, several Romanesque-style churches and the path through the Palude Pollini offer different perspectives on the area.

Archaeological traces and historic festivals

The garden of the Museo Civico Archeologico e Paleontologico corresponds to the archaeological site of the Lombard necropolis on Via Vanoni. For visitors interested in cultural history, this provides a precise connection to a specific testimony to the Lombard past.

The Palio dei Rioni recalls the four historical periods documented for Arsago Seprio in a historic festival procession. The procession passes through the streets of the historic town centre. The Palio dei Rioni opens with the Notte a Colori celebration, which features live music, entertainment programmes and local cuisine.

The Torre Altomedievale and the town centre

The Torre Altomedievale di Arsago Seprio stands in a commanding position in the town centre. Its ground plan is square, while the tower is partly ruined. It originally served as a lookout post. The ruins are considered the only remains of the Visconti castle from the 14th century. The tower thus connects its visible form with a clearly defined medieval past.

Romanesque religious buildings and distinctive details

The Basilica di San Vittore is an important example of a Romanesque church built on the site of an earlier religious building. Its rectangular ground plan and three broad naves define the spatial layout. The Battistero di San Giovanni has an octagonal ground plan. A chapel to the right of the altar serves as a lapidarium and preserves Roman and Carolingian inscriptions.

The Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano has a Romanesque appearance and a single-nave structure measuring 6 × 11 metres. Its altar table is an ancient marble slab bearing an inscription about Caio Terenzio and his family. Its setting between fields and forests complements the architectural features with a distinctly rural backdrop.

Santa Maria in Monticello was built on a small hill overlooking Piazza Cavour in the town centre. Remains of Romanesque frescoes have been preserved there; they were discovered during restoration work in 1975. The altar contains a 16th-century icon depicting the Virgin Mary nursing the infant Jesus.

The Palude Pollini as a landscape experience

The path through the Palude Pollini passes through agricultural, wooded and wetland areas. For your travel planning, this section offers a different focus from the churches and the medieval tower: here, the changing landscapes rather than the architecture shape the overall impression.
