Discover Porto Ceresio on Lake Lugano

Porto Ceresio combines the lakeside landscape of Lake Lugano with military history, sacred sites, regional trails and a distinctive local history. This makes it possible to explore the town both along the water and through historical and natural attractions.

Lakeside Promenade and Lake Lugano

Porto Ceresio lies on Lake Lugano, formerly also known as Lago Ceresio. The more than two-kilometer-long lakeside promenade runs from the railway station and ferry landing through the town almost to the Swiss border. In some sections, it is built over the water. It forms a clearly recognizable route through Porto Ceresio for walks, bike rides and views of the lake.

Military History at Monte Grumello

At Monte Grumello and near the railway station are fortifications from the First World War that formed part of the Linea Cadorna. The section at Monte Grumello can be reached via the road to the hamlet of Ca’ del Monte; near Piazzone, an uphill path marked in yellow begins. From the summit, there is a panorama over Lake Lugano.

Town Center, Museum and Sacred Sites

The historic town center also preserves specific points of interest. The Corte del Pozzo takes its name from a freshwater well, whose remains are visible near the entrance arch. The Corte houses a museum with a permanent exhibition of paintings and stucco work by the Appiani family from the 17th and 18th centuries. It also presents objects relating to the everyday life, customs and resources of the inhabitants of Porto Ceresio from around 1850 to 1940.

The Chiesa di Sant’Ambrogio was elevated to parish church status in 1722. The Santuario di Maria Ausiliatrice in Selvapiana was built after the air raid of October 24, 1942. The inhabitants of Porto Ceresio attributed the town’s preservation to the intervention of Mary.

Hiking Trails, Nature and Activities

Several trails are central for hikers. The Sentiero della Pace, Route 3, runs as a circular trail between Porto Ceresio and Cuasso al Monte. Hikes on this Sentiero begin in the hamlet of Ca’ del Monte and lead to trenches, tunnels and observation posts. A regional route of the Linea Cadorna leads from Porto Ceresio via Monte d’Erta to Bocchetta Stivione.

Nature and water complement these historical attractions. Porto Ceresio is an important gateway to the protected, wooded area of the PLIS delle Cinque Vette. The municipal area forms part of the protected natural surroundings of the Monte San Giorgio fossil site; the Italian side of this mountain area has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2010. Boat trips by sailboat on Lake Lugano are possible from Porto Ceresio. Bike tours are also possible, and bicycles can be rented.

For travel to the area, Trenord’s RegioExpress line RE5 connects Porto Ceresio with Varese, Gallarate and Milan. When choosing your hotel, you can focus your stay on the lakeside promenade, the historic town center, the lake or the trails around Monte Grumello.
