Grantola can be explored through several specific features: in the historic center stands the former parish church of San Carlo, the Cascata del Calderone lies in the forests, and the Valtravaglia Tour and Margorabbia cycling route pass through the town. San Carlo and San Pietro

The former parish church of San Carlo stands in the historic center of Grantola. It was built in the 16th century at the request of Cardinal Carlo Borromeo and deconsecrated in 1965, meaning that it was no longer used for its original ecclesiastical purpose. The former church was acquired by the municipal administration and is now used as a venue for cultural activities.

The Church of San Pietro also represents the town’s long history. It is one of the oldest churches in Valtravaglia and, despite alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries, retains large parts of its original structure. These include extensive sections of the masonry and some parts of the bell tower. For visitors interested in culture, San Pietro thus offers a direct view of preserved structural elements and of the changes that have shaped a historic place of worship over several centuries.

Medieval Traces and a Palazzo Not Open to Visitors

The medieval walls are another of Grantola’s historical features. They were probably part of a fortification used to control and defend the area. Palazzo De Nicola, on the other hand, is privately owned and cannot be visited. It is therefore not one of the places you can enter as part of a sightseeing visit.

Waterfall and Cycling Routes

The Cascata del Calderone adds a scenic dimension to Grantola. It is a small, graceful waterfall in the forests of Grantola. The path to the Cascata del Calderone begins at Grantola’s ancient washhouse.

There are also specific connections to cycling. The Valtravaglia Tour, a cycling route, passes through Grantola. The Margorabbia cycling route also runs through Grantola and continues as far as Luino.

Gastronomic Events

The local culinary culture is reflected in two events. In 2026, the Sagra del baccalà alla vicentina will take place for its 11th edition as a gastronomic event, on Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6, 2026. If you plan your trip for this period, this festival is one of Grantola’s specific culinary highlights.

At the 17th Busecca dell'Alpino, Trippa alla moda alpina is prepared. The dish can only be collected with a suitable container. The event therefore highlights a local food tradition in which collection is expressly subject to this practical requirement. Together with the Sagra del baccalà alla vicentina, it creates a culinary focus that extends beyond individual sights.
