Campagnano: Churches, Forest Trails and Expansive Lake Views

Campagnano reveals itself through sacred history, clearly defined trails and expansive views over Lake Maggiore. Churches, chapels and paths give the village a distinct character. San Rocco stands on a natural promontory rising steeply above Lake Maggiore and overlooks a large part of the lake. The trails connect Campagnano with other places and lead to landscape viewpoints where forests, hillsides and small religious buildings come together. Churches and History in Campagnano

The Church of Madonna Addolorata was built in the 16th century by expanding an existing votive chapel. In the center of Campagnano stands the 17th-century Church of San Sebastiano. The two churches date from different periods of construction and therefore provide two clearly separate historical points of reference when exploring Campagnano.

San Martino also represents the religious history of the area: the church was the religious center of all the settlements on the right-hand slope of the Veddasca. Near San Martino stands a Romanesque bell tower that certainly dates from the 15th century and also served as a lookout tower for monitoring the entire valley. The Church of San Rocco, in turn, was built following a vow made in the village of Campagnano during the plague epidemic of 1577.

Trail Routes for Your Orientation

The Sentiero 123 circular trail connects Campagnano with Musignano and Sarangio. Along its route, Sentiero 123 also passes the Cappella di Cima. This small religious building is thus incorporated into the connection between Campagnano, Musignano and Sarangio.

Two other trails reach Piazza Solera in Campagnano. A branch of Sentiero 122 leads to the laghetto della Montagnola, which is surrounded by a birch forest. The final section of Sentiero 122 reaches Piazza Solera in Campagnano via a descending path that becomes a mule track toward the end. Sentiero 125A also reaches Piazza Solera in Campagnano, but via a steeper mule track running continuously through the forest. When planning a day trip, the terrain character of the final section of these two trails therefore matters, not just their shared destination, Piazza Solera.

Lake, Forest and a Traditional Feast Day

The laghetto della Montagnola adds a quieter landscape accent. The traditional Sagra di San Rocco is a cultural highlight. It takes place every year on August 16 in the small panoramic square beside the chapel. The small lake and birch forest thus form a landscape motif alongside the religious sites.
