Rancio Valcuvia between its historic center and nature trails

Rancio Valcuvia combines a clearly recognizable historic center with trails and natural attractions in the surrounding area. The historic center includes the inhabited districts of Rancio and Cantevria. Narrow lanes, Romanesque bridges, old portals made of hewn stone, and several votive frescoes characterize this area. The Rancina stream crosses the historic center; five bridges connect its two banks, including a Romanesque bridge.

Culture and architecture in the historic center

On Via Mazzini stands the former monastery of the Humiliati, Ex-Convento degli Umiliati, which dates back to the 14th century. The Madonna del Latte fresco is located on Via San Pietro in Cantevria; it was probably painted at the beginning of the 15th century. The Chiesa dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano has a Latin-cross floor plan, side chapels, and a semicircular apse. For visitors interested in culture, a former monastery, a fresco, and a church building with differently designed sacred forms come together here.

Historic trails and local history

Sass Merèe is an old paved path that was recently restored by the municipality of Rancio Valcuvia. Until the end of the 19th century, it was the only route into the upper valley. Those interested in historic trails can see from this example how closely local history is connected with the former route into the valley area.

The cellar of the Rancio Valcuvia town hall is a Luogo della Memoria. It commemorates the events that took place in the village in November 1943 and served as an interrogation and torture room during those events. Alongside architecture and the landscape, the difficult history of the village is therefore also one of the subjects that you can place in context in Rancio Valcuvia.

Waterfall and trails in the natural landscape

The Cascata del Ronco provides a distinctive landscape feature. The small waterfall is located in Rancio Valcuvia within Parco del Campo dei Fiori. It consists of two small cascades, the first of which emerges from a cave. This unusual form makes the waterfall a vivid natural detail of the village.

If you would like to visit the Cascata del Ronco, you can reach it from the parking area near the A-27 company. Follow the signs for Sentiero 319; after 100 meters, you will reach the turnoff for the waterfall.

The Sentiero 19/319 also begins near the medieval center of Rancio. Its starting point is at the picnic area equipped by Parco Campo dei Fiori, at the intersection of Strada Provinciale No. 62 and Via Valganna. Sentiero 18/318 begins in Rancio Valcuvia and leads to Torbiera del Paù Majur (Palude Maggiore), one of the nature reserves of Parco Campo dei Fiori. This gives you a starting point near the historic center and a trail to a protected natural area for planning your day.
