Discover Chiaravalle: Montessori, Abbey and Ciclovia dell’Esino

Chiaravalle is a destination for you if you want culture, history and activity to coexist during a trip. Maria Montessori and a long history

The Casa Montessori in Chiaravalle is Maria Montessori’s birthplace; she was born there on 31 August 1870. Today, the Casa serves as an active study centre with two library areas. Visitors can consult documents and specialised Montessori teaching materials there.

The Permanent Archaeological Exhibition traces Chiaravalle’s history back almost two millennia before its medieval period. It is connected with archaeological finds from the Late Bronze Age that were discovered in the abbey’s cloister in 2015. The historical perspective therefore extends well beyond the medieval era.

Abbey, church and industrial history

The Abbey of Santa Maria in Castagnola was built by Cistercian monks around 1172 on the remains of a Benedictine monastery destroyed by the Saracens. The Church of Santa Maria in Castagnola combines Romanesque and Gothic styles in a building with three naves. The church’s Chapel of Santa Maria in Castagnola also contains a 14th-century statue made of glazed terracotta.

The Manifattura Tabacchi di Chiaravalle is part of the town’s industrial history. It is considered Italy’s oldest tobacco manufactory and opened on 15 September 1759. The site thus offers a historical perspective in which sacred architecture and early industrial history stand side by side.

Theatre and places of remembrance

The Teatro Tullio Giacconi hosts concerts, dramas, comedies, presentations and performances. Its architecture is distinctive as well: the theatre has a horseshoe-shaped floor plan, three tiers with boxes, and a concave, stuccoed ceiling decorated in the eclectic style of the 19th century.

The German Bunker on Via Puccini is a reminder of the Second World War. It consists of two corridors connected by a central room and was built as a shelter from bombing raids, primarily for German military personnel.

Park, festival and routes

Parco 1° Maggio covers more than 60,000 square metres and forms a large urban green space in Chiaravalle. Its facilities include a central pond with an island. The birdlife includes swans and ducks, among others. Since 1978, the park has been the venue for the traditional Festa del 1° Maggio.

For travel to the area, regional bus route CR3/SA2 connects Ancona, Falconara, Chiaravalle and Jesi. Cyclists can include the Ciclovia dell’Esino in their route: it reaches Chiaravalle and then continues across flat terrain between the riverbank and the cultivated fields.
