Monsano combines a striking medieval townscape with churches, religious art, historic villas and a cycling tour through the landscape of the Vallesina. Castle and ring of fortifications in the historic centre
The ring of fortifications has a perfectly rectangular ground plan. The historic castle of Monsano also has a rectangular ground plan measuring approximately 200 Ă— 90 metres. Its layout includes corner towers, a drawbridge and a partially preserved moat. The combination of clear geometry and defensive architectural elements gives the town centre a particularly tangible architectural character that can be appreciated without extensive prior knowledge of art history.
Monsano is first mentioned in historical records in 1197, at that time as a dependency of Valfucina Abbey near San Vicino. This early reference adds to the picture of a place whose past can be traced not only through its fortifications but also through its religious buildings.
Churches, art and historic sites
The Church of the Most Holy Sacrament was built in the 16th century and completely rebuilt in 1701. It was formerly known as Santa Maria del Soccorso. The original core of the Church of San Pietro Apostolo dates back to the 12th century. Inside is an altarpiece by Claudio Ridolfi from the 17th century. It depicts the Madonna and Child together with Saints Francis and Stephen.
The village of Sant’Ubaldo is also home to the 18th-century Villa Pianetti and its park. Another religious connection dates back to 1472: Andrea di Bartolo was commissioned at that time to paint a fresco of the Virgin Mary based on the account given by witnesses to the apparition. For those interested in culture, this creates a tour through several eras, from medieval origins to later ecclesiastical and aristocratic buildings.
Festivals with music and regional character
The Festa dell'Assunta features food stalls from 13 August to 15 August. In the rooms adjoining the sanctuary, the festival also includes games and an exhibition. This period therefore combines religious tradition with community and culinary elements. The Monsano Folk Festival also takes place in August. Held at changing venues, this international festival is dedicated to traditional folk music and folk revivals.
Cycling along the Esino
For cycling travellers, the Monsano MTB cycling tour offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. Its route starts at Monsano Castello, joins the cycle path along the Esino and reaches Jesi. For much of the way, the tour follows the Esino River and the landscapes of the Vallesina floodplain. Its route also provides an opportunity to visit the Ripa Bianca WWF Oasis. The route thus connects the starting point in the historic town centre with river landscapes, the expansive floodplain and a natural attraction. Depending on your personal interests, Monsano can therefore be viewed as a cultural or musical destination, or as a starting point for a cycling tour.
