Villa Romana: Hiking, Landscapes and the Cuisine of the Marche

Villa Romana was founded on January 6, 1925, in a hilly area shaped by the landscape around Ancona. The paths leading up to Villa Romana and the Conero landscape provide a clear setting for a stay in which you can combine history, nature and physical activity. Since 2013, Villa Romana has officially been included in the Elenco dei Locali Storici delle Marche. This recognition confirms its cultural and historical value for the area. Hiking Routes of Various Lengths

The CAI Ancona–Varano–Valle del Boranico–Varano hiking route is classified as T – tourist, is approximately 10 kilometres long and takes about three and a half hours without breaks. It leads uphill from the valley of the Miano stream to Villa Romana. If you do not plan your day solely according to the distance, you should bear in mind that this duration explicitly excludes breaks.

On the route from Ancona to Sirolo, the Grande Traversata del Conero continues from Casa delle Culture via Villa Romana and Montacuto; this route is 16 kilometres long. Another connection is the first stage of the Cammino della Porta d'Oriente from Ancona to Poggio. It is classified as T – tourist and is 18.36 kilometres long. The stage follows the old road from Pietralacroce to the hilltop of Villa Romana and then continues between the districts of Montacuto and Varano. The different route lengths make it easier to compare various day plans.

The Conero Landscape and Forest

The Direzione Parco eco-trail is 5 kilometres long and runs through a regional nature and protected area of Conero. On level ground, it leads as far as the level of the Villa Romana restaurant on Via del Castellano; its upper forest section reaches Villa Romana.

The hill leading up to Villa Romana was once cultivated land and was later abandoned. Nature gradually took over there, with typical plants of the forests in the hilly landscape of the Marche. The woodland near Villa Romana includes field maple, manna ash, downy oak, hop hornbeam and southern ash. For nature enthusiasts, this creates a landscape in which former land use and the gradual spread of forest vegetation stand side by side.
