San Vittore: Caves, Forest and Roman Bridge

San Vittore combines paleontological discoveries, striking gorges, forest paths and evidence of Roman and Romanesque architecture.

Fossils and Regional History

The paleontological section of the Museo Speleopaleontologico e Archeologico displays the fossil Marta, along with other fossils, rocks and sediments from the Frasassi Gorge. The museum was established to preserve an ichthyosaur fossil that was found in 1976 in Camponocecchio, in the municipality of Genga. This means that a visit to San Vittore can also be combined with a focused look at the geological history of the surrounding area. The museum visit therefore remains focused on paleontological topics and the history of regional finds in San Vittore.

Forest Paths, Gorges and Mountains

The Sentiero dell’Aquila passes through three different types of forest and offers viewpoints over the Gola di Frasassi and Gola della Rossa gorges. The Frasassi Caves are also located in the immediate vicinity of San Vittore. The three nearby mountains extend the landscape beyond the trail itself. The summit of Monte di Frasassi, as well as Monte Valmontagnana and Monte La Croce, are also located in the immediate vicinity of San Vittore.

The Anello di Valle Montagnana mountain-bike loop begins in San Vittore Terme and follows traffic-free paved roads to the high-altitude secondary meadows. Those who enjoy dividing their days between brief nature observations, hiking and cycling can take these different landscape experiences into account when planning their trip.

Frasassi Caves and Activities on the Sentino

Genga–S.Vittore station is located on the Ancona–Rome railway line. From the station exit, the car park and the Frasassi Caves ticket office building in the San Vittore delle Chiuse area can be reached on foot in 15 minutes. A visit to the Frasassi Caves includes a guided tour and the necessary equipment. With Genga–S.Vittore Terme station and the 15-minute walk to the caves, travelling by train can be planned concretely.

The Frasassi Avventura adventure park is also located in the San Vittore area, on the banks of the Sentino River, with zip lines and suspension bridges. Its location on the Sentino and its zip lines and suspension bridges distinguish this attraction from the cave tour.

Roman Bridge and Architectural Heritage

The Roman Bridge of San Vittore di Genga stands opposite the Romanesque church of San Vittore delle Chiuse. It crosses the Sentino River and is accessible via a fortified tower. Its location on the Sentino directly connects the river landscape with the area’s architectural heritage.

The Abbazzia San Vittore alle Chiuse monastery is located in the immediate vicinity of San Vittore. In the wider regional area are the Palazzo del Podestà palace, Podestà Palace and the Civic Picture Gallery museum. These destinations complement the immediate natural and cave experiences with additional stops for visitors interested in culture.
