The historic trails between Foce and Lago di Pilato are not managed directly by the national park; they are merely marked with horizontal CAI color markings. For the hike, the national park recommends being accompanied by a park guide or a qualified CAI association. Late spring and summer are considered the preferred seasons, as the area is covered in snow for much of the year.

A sensitive habitat

The valley of Lago di Pilato in the Foce area is a U-shaped valley of glacial origin. It is considered the most sensitive ecosystem in Monti Sibillini National Park. Lago di Pilato is fed exclusively by snowmelt and precipitation and is the habitat of the endemic Chirocefalo del Marchesoni. In the Foce area, visitors must not approach the shores of Lago di Pilato because the Chirocefalo lays its eggs in the gravel along the shallower shore.

Via Monte Vettore to Forca di Presta

Another prominent mountain route is the CAI crossing from Foce to Forca di Presta. It leads over Monte Vettore and past Rifugio Tito Zilioli. The crossing is rated EE in difficulty, covers 14.7 km, includes 1,502 meters of elevation gain and 946 meters of descent, and has a stated duration of 6 hours and 30 minutes. The CAI recommends this route when there is no snow, from late spring through autumn. It begins a few meters below the small lake before Foce and leads through a beech forest toward Monte Banditello.

In the hamlet of Foce, the visitor service provides information about travel arrangements, accommodation options and activities such as trekking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Culture and landscape near Foce

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo in Foce may stand on the ruins of an old hermitage or abbey that was already present in the 13th century. The Fiera di Foce takes place in the hamlet of Foce on August 15. Just beyond Foce di Montemonaco lies the Piana della Gardosa, an expansive meadow valley surrounded by the mountains Monte Vettore and Monte Sibilla.
