Cartoceto among Olive Groves and History

Cartoceto lies on a hill 235 meters above sea level. Olive groves and cultivated fields surround the town, giving it a distinct landscape setting. For you, this creates a destination where regional cuisine, historic buildings, and paths through the surrounding area stand closely alongside one another.

Olive Oil and Regional Cuisine

Olive cultivation reaches its greatest extent in the Cartoceto area, favored by a distinctive local microclimate. Extensive olive oil production has been documented here since as early as the late 13th century. Vincisgrassi, a dish from the local peasant tradition, was also popular and widespread in Cartoceto.

The Frantoio del Trionfo is an 18th-century olive mill with a mechanical belt drive. From there, panoramic views extend across the Metauro Valley to the coast of Fano. During tours of olive mills, visitors can witness the production of olive oil, learn about the culture of olive cultivation, and learn to recognize high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

The Frantoio della Rocca is a restored example of the architecture of the historic center and offers special selections of extra virgin olive oil.

History in the Town Center and Beyond

The Palazzo del Popolo is crowned by a clock tower and defines today’s Piazza Garibaldi. It was incorporated into the town walls of Cartoceto and, with a drawbridge, served a military and defensive function. Its original structure is thought to date back to the 12th century; a first reconstruction is documented for the 14th century.

The Teatro del Trionfo was established in the first half of the 18th century in place of an existing olive mill with an adjoining olive storehouse. Today, it has three tiers of boxes with a total of 37 boxes.

The Pieve dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is located about one kilometer from the historic center, on a hill overlooking the lower Metauro Valley. It houses the fresco “Crocifissione,” which was restored in 1998 and returned to its original state from 1477.

Immediately outside the historic center lies the Convento e Chiesa di Santa Maria del Soccorso complex, surrounded by the greenery of Monte Partemio. The present structure of the Collegiata di Santa Maria della Misericordia in Cartoceto was built between 1831 and 1840. The Fontana dell’Olio is a sculpture by the monk and sculptor Padre Stefano Pigini; it depicts the goddess of abundance.

Paths through the Surrounding Area

The Via dell’Acqua offers routes among mills, springs, and olive groves. The “Cartoceto DOP, il Festival” offers guided green routes for exploring the surrounding area. Prior registration was required to take part in the festival’s “I Sentieri Verdi.” In this way, Cartoceto combines insights into olive culture with experiences of the landscape explored through specific historical and agricultural themes.
