Gradara amid fortress, art and landscape

Gradara combines historic fortress architecture with museums, gardens and bird-of-prey watching. The Rocca di Gradara is a work of Italian fortress architecture whose last major restoration took place from 1921 to 1923, giving the building a strongly medieval and neo-medieval appearance.

Medieval ensemble and literary history

The Castello di Gradara and its fortified borgo are among the best-preserved medieval complexes in Italy. Of the two defensive walls, the outer one extends for almost 800 metres. Along the old walls, the 300-metre-long Ramparts Walk leads through Gradara as a panoramic route. For orientation around the complex, the extensive wall line and a clearly defined section of path thus stand side by side.

At the Rocca di Gradara, you can visit 14 rooms furnished with antique furniture and works of art. The interiors complement the defensive structure with historic furnishings and works of art.

The Rocca di Gradara is traditionally regarded as the setting of the tragedy of Paolo and Francesca, immortalised by Dante and his verses in the fifth canto of the Divine Comedy. The literary connection in Gradara is specifically associated with the castle and the two figures.

Underground rooms, siege engines and graphic art

The Museo Storico Gradara includes access to a medieval cave dating from the 4th or 5th century AD. It forms part of an extensive underground network in Gradara. In addition to this underground area, the museum displays a true-to-scale collection of Roman and medieval siege engines, considered unique in Italy.

The collection includes models from the Roman and medieval periods, thereby juxtaposing two historical eras of siege technology.

The MARV Museo d’Arte Rubini Vesin is housed in the Palazzo Rubini Vesin. The palace has ancient grottos and underground rooms dating from the 16th century. The halls of the piano nobile acquired their current design in 1707. In addition, MARV offers a programme of quarterly exhibitions of modern and contemporary graphic art. Here, historic rooms and graphic art belong to different chronological layers of the museum.

Panorama and birds of prey

At the foot of the western castle walls lies the Giardino degli Ulivi di via Cappuccini. There is a stone amphitheatre surrounded by a garden. You can linger here and enjoy the panorama towards the sea. The garden is located directly next to the fortress and at the same time opens up views towards the sea.

Il Teatro dell’Aria is located immediately outside Gradara’s historic centre, on the Passeggiata degli innamorati. In the park there, you can observe eagles, falcons, vultures and nocturnal birds of prey in free flight. Its location on the Passeggiata and the observation of birds in free flight are characteristic of this place outside the historic centre.
