Cuccurano: Sacred Traces and Brickmaking History

Cuccurano between the Via Flaminia and the History of Brickmaking

At the Via Flaminia, Cuccurano brings together sacred landmarks, industrial history, and traces of its medieval past. The Chiesa del Crocifisso is located on the Via Flaminia opposite Cuccurano's public park. Following its sale to private individuals and the complete redesign of the interior, only the façade of the building remains.

Historic Routes and Landscape

The former Fano–Urbino railway line is also part of the area's history: Cuccurano was one of twelve intermediate stations. The landscape along the ancient Via Flaminia in the Fano area is characterized by gentle hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, as well as the fertile Metauro Valley. An old milestone can also be found on the SS2 Flaminia at kilometer 278; it is partly submerged in the concrete of newer buildings. Thus, different traces of transport, landscape, and regional development meet in the surrounding area.

Industrial Archaeology and Brickworks

The so-called Fornacione was built in the second half of the 19th century for lime production. Despite its restoration, it is part of the area's industrial archaeology. The history of the town therefore also encompasses industrial production and not only sacred connections.

Cuccurano's connection with brickworks can be traced back to the 15th century; the decisive factor was the locally available clay suitable for brickmaking. In addition to bricks, the Cuccurano brickworks produced handcrafted, decorated vases and architectural terracotta elements. These included moulded consoles, balustrades, rosettes, and cornice elements. Anyone wishing to understand architecture and craftsmanship through specific materials and forms will find a clear approach to the history of the area here.

San Biagio and Older Evidence

San Biagio is the patron saint of Cuccurano and is regarded as the protector of the throat. The parish church of San Biagio, together with the parish house, was once located in Ferretto and was moved from there to Cuccurano in 1925; the parish house was moved as well.

Another religious trace is the Madonna di Loreto niche. It has a shell-shaped apse and contains a small sandstone statue of the Madonna di Loreto. Based on collected testimonies, its installation is estimated to have taken place at the beginning of the 20th century; the exact date is unknown.

The existence of a castrum in Cuccurano is documented in a deed issued by Frederick I in 1177. Cuccurano appears as fundo Cucuriano in a deed from 1054 (?) and in a deed of donation from 1116. These early references give the area a historical depth spanning many centuries.

When choosing a hotel for Cuccurano, you can weigh these focal points deliberately. Decide whether you would primarily like to discover the area through its religious landmarks, industrial traces, the history of the Via Flaminia, or the landscape around Fano. This keeps your accommodation planning aligned with your own travel interests.
