The history of Sassofeltrio can be traced back to AD 756. In June 1463, Federico da Montefeltro finally conquered the Castello dei Sasso after a violent siege. The Rocca of Sassofeltrio was rebuilt on the site of the destroyed Malatesta fortification; the Sienese military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini was commissioned with the reconstruction. To this day, the historic center is surrounded by powerful fortification walls that bear witness to its medieval origins.

Gypsum rock formations, views and museums

Sassofeltrio is situated on a gypsum-rock promontory near the central part of the Conca Valley. The public park at the highest point of Sassofeltrio is associated with the nickname “Terrazza del Montefeltro”. From the public park “La Rocca”, there are panoramic views of the sea, the hills of Montefeltro and the Apennine range. The municipal museum “Piccole storie di guerra” is located in the same building as the public park “La Rocca”. The Sentiero delle acque solfuree runs through Valle Sant’Anastasio in the Sassofeltrio area and is classified as CAI 060. It reaches an elevation of 800 meters above sea level. Sant’Anastasio is known for its sulfurous and alkaline spring. Several motocross tracks expand the range of activities in the area. Gesso is also home to a newer holistic park.

The festival of San Giuseppe in Fratte di Sassofeltrio takes place on March 19. The festival of Sant’Anastasio in Valle Sant’Anastasio is associated with the first Sunday in August. The festival of Sant’Andrea Apostolo in Gesso di Sassofeltrio is associated with the last Sunday in November. In Fratte, the fourth Sunday in September is associated with the Sagra dei fagioli con le cotiche. The name refers to a rustic dish made from Borlotti beans and pork rind, slowly cooked in a richly seasoned tomato sauce and served on hot bruschetta.
