Macerata Feltria: Roman Era, Theatre and Thermal Waters

Macerata Feltria combines a Roman past, theatre architecture, thermal facilities and paths along the water. This creates a destination whose character can be discovered through culture, local history, regional cuisine and activity. The themes range from the Museo civico archeologico e paleontologico to the facilities surrounding the thermal springs.

Archaeology and Local History

The Museo civico archeologico e paleontologico di Macerata Feltria is housed in the 14th-century Palazzo del Podestà. The museum devotes extensive space to the Roman city of Pitinum Pisaurense. It was inhabited from the late 3rd century BC and continued to exist at least until the 6th century AD. The eight exhibition rooms trace the ancient history of Montefeltro from prehistoric times through the Roman era.

In the Area archeologica di Pitinum Pisaurense, a still-visible, broad Roman road paved with stone slabs has been preserved and identified as the decumanus maximus. In the southern area, there are also the remains of a thermal building with recognizable suspensurae of the calidarium. The archaeological site is located near the medieval Pieve di San Cassiano in Pitino.

Il Castello is the older fortified district of Macerata Feltria. It dates from the Lombard period and is situated on a hill. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in the second half of the 19th century to replace the former parish church in Il Castello.

Theatre, Museums and Regional Culture

The Teatro Angelo Battelli was inaugurated on 26 September 1932. Its auditorium is horseshoe-shaped and has three tiers of boxes, with 56 boxes in total. Following extensive restoration, the theatre reopened to the public on 23 September 2001. Another cultural highlight is the Museo della Radio, housed in a hall of the former Convento di San Francesco.

Thermal Waters and Paths Along the Water

Pitinum Thermae offers spa treatments based on sulphur water. These include inhalation therapy, mud baths, dermatological and gynaecological treatments, as well as insufflations for childhood deafness. The facility also includes a thermal pool with hydromassage. In the Parco fluviale delle Terme, there are fitness and exercise paths along the thermal centre.

Outside the town of Macerata Feltria, a fitness trail begins in San Gaspare. It runs along the right bank of the Apsa and the left side of the lake until it reaches the area of the sports facilities. This concrete path along the water complements the destination’s cultural and historical sites and thermal attractions.

Antica Fiera di San Giuseppe

The Antica Fiera di San Giuseppe takes place in Macerata Feltria on the third weekend of March. The event features food stalls where you can try piadina, porchetta, as well as local salumi and formaggi—that is, regional cured meats and cheese specialities. The date combines a regular annual event with direct access to the local food culture.
